HelP: Exporting & Importing References from Resources for College Libraries into RefWorks

These instructions assume that you have searched Resources for College Libraries and have a list of results.

Exporting References from Resources for College Libraries

  1. At your search results, mark the records you want to import by clicking the check boxes next to each reference.
  2. Then click the Download button.

  1. In the Download Selected Item window, make sure ASCII (Plain Text) is selected.
  2. Click the Download Now button.

  1. In the File Download window, note the name of the file you are downloading, rcl.txt.
  2. Click the Save button.

  1. In the Save As window, note the name of the file you are saving, rcl.txt.
  2. Note where you are saving the file.
  3. Click the Save button .

  1. In the Download Complete window, click the Close button.

Importing References into RefWorks

From the library's homepage under the Welcome! tab, click RefWorks.

  1. The RefWorks Login Center page will open
  2. Enter your login name.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Click the Login button.

NOTE: If you are in an off-campus location, the initial RefWorks Login Center page will look different and you will be asked for a Group Code. If you do not know the group code, call the reference desk at 513 745-4808 to obtain this information.

  1. Click References in the top menu.
  2. Then click Import in the drop-down menu..

  1. Click the down arrow in the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box and select the BooksInPrint import filter. Your screen will refresh.
  2. Click the down arrow in the Database drop-down box and select BooksInPrint (ASCII Full Record) .
  3. Click the Browse button adjacent to the Import Data from the following Text File textbox.

  1. In the Choose File window, click the rcl.txt file.
  2. Click Open.

At the RefWorks Import page:

  1. Back at the RefWorks Import window, note that the path and rcl.txt file display in the Import Data textbox.
  2. Click the Import button at the bottom of the page.

The RefWorks Import page will open

  1. RefWorks will prompt with Import completed when it is finished.
  2. Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references.

  1. RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window.
  2. For information about searching and sorting your citations or about creating and organizing folders click the RefWorks HELP link, or for information about downloading citations from different databases, see the RefWorks help links in the library's database lists (see second image below).
  3. Click the OLinks icon to see if an article is available in full-text, print or microform format and to submit an interlibrary loan request.
