Redesign existing assignments to reduce plagiarism:
- Change class assignments from year to year so previous students will not be able to share
- Require a draft to be turned in to our plagiarism detection software as a learning tool
- Require students to hand in notes or outlines with their papers
- Have more than one writing assignment
- Have students do oral presentations on their research
- Don’t allow students to change topics at the last minute. This often signals the intent to plagiarize after putting off the paper too long
- Have assignments dates throughout the semester- one for references etc.
- Pick unique and unusual topics for students to research
- Assign short papers. Papers shorter than 6 pages usually rule out custom paper mills since six pages is often the minimum.
- Have assignments that encourage personal reflection and have students engage and apply ideas
- Build process oriented assignments. Ask for a thesis statement, outline, first draft etc. at various points during the semester.
- Use an in class essay early in the semester and keep it on file
- Require oral reports of student papers
- Require most reference be up-to-date
- Require a Meta learning essay, one the day you collect the papers, have students write an in class essay about what they learned from the assignment.
