Education Services: Instruction

Faculty have found that in-class library instruction can improve the quality of students' papers and assignments. As a result of instruction, students experience less anxiety about working in the library and become familiar with basic research techniques.

Instruction Room ILibrary instruction sessions can be held in one of the two instruction rooms in the library or in campus classrooms. Instruction Room I, located on the first floor of the library, is an interactive classroom with 24 computer workstations and ceiling mounted computer projection. This room also contains a flip chart and an overhead projector. The instructor's podium includes a computer workstation with a video switching system that provides interactivity between the instructor’s podium and the students’ workstations. The control panel for the switching system is located on the instructor’s podium. With this system the instructor is able to:

  • Distribute the instructor's computer screen to all student stations (or a subset)
  • Display a particular student’s computer screen to the instructor’s podium, or distribute it around the room
  • Send any student's computer screen to the projector

Instruction Room IIIinstruction Room II, located on the secnd floor of the library, is a demonstration classroom that seats 40. The instructor's podium includes a computer workstation with adjacent computer projection. This room also contains an overhead projector, flip chart and television.

Library instruction sessions, orientations and tours may be scheduled several different ways:

  • The first, and best way, is to contact your department's library liaison (see right menu).
  • If your liaison is not available, contact Betty Porter, Assistant Director for Education Services at 513 745-4830 or porter@xavier.edu.
  • You can also fill out our electronic instruction request form or use the print form available online in Portable Document Format (PDF) or at the reference desk. Please send print forms to the attention of Betty Porter at McDonald Library ML 5211.

Please allow at least two weeks notice when scheduling library classes.
