Who can use resource sharing services?

Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and Jesuit visitors may borrow materials through document delivery services. As a borrower you agree to accept responsibility for items loaned from other institutions.

How do I Obtain books not in XPLORE or OhioLINK?

  1. Make sure the book is not available in XPLORE.
  2. Make sure the book is not available in OhioLINK.
  3. Fill out the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Request Form .

How do I obtain journal articles not at Xavier?
  1. Make sure the article is not available in digital format:
    • Click FIND IT @ XU for the article you need in a research database.
    • Search for the journal you need in JOURNALS @ XU.
  2. Fill out the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Request Form .

How do I Obtain audiovisuals not in XPLORE or OhioLINK?
  1. Make sure the audiovisual is not available in XPLORE.

How do I obtain articles in the library annex?
  1. Fill out the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Request Form.
  2. See these instructions for help filling out the form.
  3. The journal will be ready for pickup at the Connection Center (3rd floor of the Learning Commons) after 10am the day after the request is submitted. Materials requested on Friday will be available for pickup on Monday; materials requested on Saturday or Sunday will be available for pickup on Tuesday. You will be notified via telephone or e-mail if a requested item is not available.
  4. You must photocopy the article you want as journals cannot be checked out.

How do I obtain books in the library annex or remote stakcs?

  1. In XPLORE click the title of the book you want.
  2. Click the Request button and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. The book will be ready for pickup at the Connection Center (3rd floor of the Learning Commons) after 10am the day after the request is submitted. Materials requested on Friday will be available for pickup on Monday; materials requested on Saturday or Sunday will be available for pickup on Tuesday. You will be notified via telephone or e-mail if a requested item is not available.
  4. Books can be checked out at the Connection Center (3rd floor of the Learning Commons) any time the library is open (check our hours page).

How long does it take to get items from other libraries?

Turnaround time depends upon the availability of the item and the cooperation of other libraries.

  • Books and other borrowed items usually arrive within 3-21 work days. 
  • Copies of journal articles and other documents shipped by mail or courier usually arrive within 7-14 work days.
  • Copies of journal articles and other documents shipped electronically usually arrive within 3-5 work days. 
How much does it cost?

Fees for document delivery services are subsidized by Xavier University Library.  There are no costs for borrowing materials or obtaining copies of documents. 

How will I be notified that my library materials have arrived?

You will be notified by email (preferred) or telephone when materials borrowed through Resource Sharing services arrive. Books and other borrowed items may be picked up at the Connection Center in the Conaton Learning Commons. 

Articles and other copied documents are delivered electronically. Your email notification message will direct you to your ILLiad account where you can locate the articles under View Electronically Received Articles. Please retrieve these electronic documents within two weeks.

What if I need the materials immediately?

If you need the materials right away and they are available at another SWON (formerly GCLC) or OhioLINK library, you may go directly to the library and borrow (using your ALL Card) or copy the materials you need. The document delivery or reference staff will assist you in locating libraries that own the materials you need.

How long may I use the materials?

The date the item is due is determined by the lending library and marked on the book wrap. 

May I renew materials?

To request one renewal of books borrowed through resource sharing services, call the resource sharing office at 513 745-4812 one week before the date the item is due.

Where should I return the library books I have borrowed?

Materials borrowed through resource sharing services must be returned to the Connection Center desk in the Conaton Learning Commons or to the book drop outside McDonald Library.

What kind of materials may not be borrowed?

  • Reference materials
  • Rare, valuable, or very old materials
  • Entire issues of journals
  • Some theses and dissertations
  • Materials with local circulation restrictions
  • Some audiovisual materials
