Highly Recommended Databases

Catholic Periodical and Literature Index Online (1981 - present; some full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) contains more than 300,000 records and includes indexed citations to articles published in Roman Catholic periodicals, papal documents, church promulgations and books about the Catholic faith that are authored by Catholics and/or produced by Catholic publishers. It is produced by American Theological Library Association and the Catholic Library Association and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

Edgecliff College Student Newspaper (1935-1980; all full-text; general copyright information) contains the entire content in digital format of the Edgecliff College student newspaper. Edgecliff College, formerly Our Lady of Cincinnati College, merged with Xavier University in 1980. The newspaper contains over 1,200 pages and chronicles the everyday life and general activities of students. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) files. It was scanned in 2010 from microfilm copies. Users can browse individual issues and years or search the full-text content. Edgecliff College Yearbook Edgecliff College Yearbook (1970-1972 & 1978-1979; all full-text; general copyright information) contains the entire content in digital format of the Edgecliff College Yearbook. Edgecliff College, formerly Our Lady of Cincinnati College, merged with Xavier University in 1980. The five yearbooks contain a total of 650 pages and depict students and activities at the college for this period of time. Oxford Biblical Studies Online (prehistory-1990's; updated monthly; all full-text; XLinks) is a comprehensive resource for the study of the Bible and biblical history directed toward college students, scholars, clergy, and anyone in need of an authoritative, ecumenical and up-to-date resource. There is a Bible verse look-up feature as well as search and browse capabilities. Texts from selected Oxford Bibles can be viewed in a side-by-side display with the user's choice of commentary and annotation for the Study Bibles, the stand-alone Oxford Bible Commentary, and A to Z concordances for the NRSV and NAB translations. Bible content is supplemented by collections of major apocryphal Old and New Testament texts in translation, as well as Oxford Handbook of Biblical Studies, Oxford History of the Biblical World, Oxford Illustrated History of the Bible, Oxford Bible Atlas, and other works. Also included is quick access to over 5,000 A to Z entries from the Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Oxford Companion to the Bible. There are hundreds of topical essays and images, timelines, tables and charts, Internet resources, a lectionary calendar, and suggested reading lists. XU Student NewspaperXU Digital Student Newspaper (1915-1 year from present; all full-text; general copyright information) contains the entire content in digital format of Xavier University's student newspaper, The Newswire. The student newspaper reports on key historical events and gives students' reflections and viewpoints on events of national and local importance, such as the death of President Kennedy and the nation at war in the 1940s. The voice of change throughout Xavier's history, the newspaper documents the merger of Edgecliff College, the effects of coeducation, and the introduction of computers on campus. Most importantly the newspaper chronicles everyday life and general activities, from athletic achievements on the field to Xavier's Centennial celebration. The newspaper collection was scanned in 2007 from microfilm copies. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format). XU Digital PhotographsXU Digital Photographs (general copyright information; how to cite and fair use handout;) is a pilot project featuring digital images from the university archives of participating AJCU (Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities) institutions. University archives typically serve as the chief historical resource for materials about a university, its people, programs and culture. Xavier University's contributions to the pilot AJCU collection include 11 historical photographs depicting alumni activities, a historical campus view, general science classes, Bellarmine Chapel dedication, the journey of St. Francis Xavier mural, and the Union Building cafeteria. Each digital image includes a title, repository, original and copyright dates, description, thumbnail and larger images, subjects and contributor. XU YearbookXU Digital Yearbooks (1924-2005; all full-text; general copyright information) contains the full-text of Xavier University's student yearbook. Named after the University's mascot, the Musketeer, the yearbook was published from 1924 to 2005 with several gaps in publication: no yearbooks were published from 1943-1946 due to World War II and yearbooks were not published in 1972-1973 or 1988-1989. The yearbook ceased publication in 2005 due to a lack of student interest and poor sales. The yearbooks chronicle every academic year with text and pictures of students, faculty, and events, with occasional sections on world events. The yearbooks constitute a pictorial history of the Xavier University campus, its students, administrators and faculty. It is an especially rich source for understanding student life and activities, including academics, honor societies, clubs, student government, performances, publications, debates & oratoricals, contests & awards, proms & balls, homecomings, intramural sports and athletics. The yearbook collection was scanned in 2006 from original print copies housed in the Xavier University Library. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format). Users can browse and/or search all volumes, individual years or the full-text content. Academic Search Complete (1985-present; updated daily; more full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) is a multidisciplinary database that covers nearly all academic areas of study. It indexes and abstracts over 9,300 journals, many of them peer-reviewed (4,400), and provides full-text for over 5,300 journals. It also includes indexing and abstracts for books, reports, conference proceedings, etc. Searchable cited references are provided for 1,000 journals. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

ATLA Religion Database (1949-present; updated quarterly; much full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) indexes journal articles, book reviews, conference proceedings, congresses, essays in multi-author works and Festschriften. It covers the Bible, church history, ecumenism, ethics, missions, pastoral ministry, religions, religious studies and theology as well as religion and religious research in related fields such as antiquities, anthropology, archaeology, business, history, law, medicine, philosophy, psychology and sociology. It contains the online version of ATLA Serials Religion Collection, Religion Index One: Periodicals (RIO), Religion Index Two: Multi-Author Works (RIT), Index to Book Reviews in Religion (IBRR) and Retrospective Indexing Project (RIP). It is produced by American Theological Library Association and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

Encyclopedia of Religion (2nd edition; all full-text; RefWorks help; XLinks) is considered a standard reference in religion. This electronic book/database presents a cross-cultural approach that emphasizes religion's role within everyday life and as a unique experience from culture to culture. The original 2,750 entries have been retained, many heavily updated, and approximately 600 entirely new articles have been added by an international team of scholars and contributors. It can be searched by keyword or phrase or browsed by volume, table of contents, or back-of-the-book index. It also contains images and photographs, as well as a dictionary. It is produced by Macmillan Reference and the user interface is provided by Gale Cengage Learning.

Jewish Studies Source (Much full-text; Tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) includes content from academic journals, magazines, books, and newspapers providing in-depth coverage of all facets of Judaism. Some of the topics covered are archaeology, anthropology, ethnic studies, history, languages, philosophy, political science, religion, and women There are also biographies of leading historical and contemporary Jews. There are extensive back files for journals such as KASHRUS (1990), Contemporary Jewry (1974), Western States Jewish History (1968), and YIVO Annual of Jewish Social Science (1946). The entire Jewish Telegraphic Agency database is available form 1922-present. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

Philosopher's Index (1940-present; updated quarterly; some full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) is a current and comprehensive bibliographic database covering scholarly research in all major fields of philosophy. It is considered the most thorough index of journal literature on the subject, features author-written abstracts covering scholarly research published in journals and books, including contributions to anthologies and book reviews. The database covers the fifteen fields of philosophy: aesthetics, axiology, philosophy of education, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of history, philosophy of language, logic, metaphysics, philosophical anthropology, metaphilosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of science, social philosophy, and the philosophy of religion. It contains research published in nearly 570 journals from 43 countries with content representing a variety of languages. It is produced by the Philosophers Information Center and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing

Religion and Philosophy Collection (1984-present; updated weekly; much full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) provides indexing and abstracts from 1984-present for 301 journals, many peer-reviewed, and full-text from 1990-present for 290 journals. It covers world religions, major denominations, biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. It is published by and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.
