Book Identification & Review Databases

Books in Print (full-text reviews; RefWorks help) complete, unbiased bibliographic information for over 5 million in-print, out-of-print, and forthcoming book, audio, and video titles. An online version of the highly regarded print title, it features over 30,000 full-text previews; 140,000 tables of contents; and over 700,000 reviews of titles by over 200,000 publishers. It also includes cover images, author biographies and annotations. The entry for each book includes the title, contributor, publication date, publisher, country of publication, market, ISBN, item status, binding format, edition, pages, price, also available through, language, Bowker subjects, general subjects, physical dimensions, other formats and additional publisher information. Some entries include a synopsis/annotation, full-text review, full-text preview and stock availability. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by R.R. Bowker. Choice Reviews Online (1988-present; updated monthly; full-text reviews) provides access to reviews published in CHOICE. It is produced by the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association, and the user interface is provided by Network Synergy Corporation. This subscription is limited to 3 concurrent users.

PsycCRITIQUES (1995-present; updated weekly; all full-text; tutorials; XLinks) provides access to reviews of current books and films. Users can view weekly releases; browse by author/editor, book/film title, or publication year; and search for reviews by author, title, keyword, year, reviewer, population group and language. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by the American Psychological Association. It is distributed by EBSCO Publishing.

Amazon.com is one of the largest commercial online sources for books, magazines, DVDs, videos, music, software, and more.

Book Review Index has been cancelled.

Academic Search Complete (1985-present; updated daily; more full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) is a multidisciplinary database that covers nearly all academic areas of study. It indexes and abstracts over 9,300 journals, many of them peer-reviewed (4,400), and provides full-text for over 5,300 journals. It also includes indexing and abstracts for books, reports, conference proceedings, etc. Searchable cited references are provided for 1,000 journals. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

Other Subject Databases may also have book reviews. Find a database by name using the alphabetical display or select from the library's list of subject categories.

Library Catalogs

XPLORE Library Catalog (tips & tricks; RefWorks help; XLinks; video tutorials) is Xavier library's online public access catalog. It includes all of the library's books, journals, audiovisuals, and microform materials. Search XPLORE by keyword, author, title and Library of Congress subject heading. If you don't find what you need, request it online (printable instructions; video tutorial) from OhioLINK, the combined library catalog of 88 college, university, public, and state libraries in Ohio.

OhioLINK Library Catalog (updated daily; video tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) provides access to more than 48 million items located at 89 college, university, public, and state libraries in Ohio. Users may request items online (printable instructions; video tutorial) and pick them up in 3 business days at an OhioLINK library of their choosing. When available there are links to Read (full-text available) and Limited Preview (limited full-text available) at Google Books. It is produced by OhioLINK and the user interface is provided by Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

WorldCat (1000 BC-present; updated daily; RefWorks help) contains millions of bibliographic records for all material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. It includes books, computer programs, films and slides, journals and magazines, chapters, papers, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, newspapers, sound recordings, videotapes and websites. It also includes Net First and the Union List of Periodicals. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center).

WorldCat.org (updated daily; RefWorks help; XLinks) lets users search the collections of libraries in your community and thousands more around the world. You can search for popular books, music CDs and videos; you can discover many new kinds of digital content, such as downloadable audiobooks; you may also find article citations with links to their full text (export articles to RefWorks to display the FindIt icon and link to the full-text, when available); authoritative research materials, such as documents and photos of local or historic significance; and digital versions of rare items that aren't available to the public. Resources are available in many languages. Users can create a free account to create lists of favorites, bibliographies, and reviews. Owning libraries are displayed in descending order by the number of miles from your geographic location or zip code. To Check Electronic Books Available Online

Women's Work EBSCO eBook Collection (covers 1980-2011; all full-text; tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) incorporates the former netLibrary electronic book collection with thousands of purchased and public domain titles with a broad coverage of topics. Users can preview an e-book online, read a page in depth, jump to specific page, or use links in the table of contents or index to go to specific chapters or topics of interest. Every word in every e-book is searchable. In addition to keyword, users can search by author, title, subject, category, ISBN, publisher, and/or date of publication. Using the Choose Databases feature, e-books can be searched along with other EBSCO databases that provide primarily journal articles. Table of contents can be previewed at the search results display without checking out or opening the e-book. Once the e-book is opened users can search within the book, consult a dictionary, zoom text, ans expand the viewing window. To create notes or add an e-book to a folder requires setting up an account. Output options include print (typically limited to 60 pages), email, and export to bibliographic management software like RefWorks. Also available are citing information for the major citation styles, bookmarking in social networking sites like Facebook, and perma-linking on websites and course management systems. Users can search the collection by keyword or phrase or browse the collection by author, title or subject area. The individual collections that have links can be searched separately. The collections come from multiple publishers (ABC-CLIO, Gale, Oxford University Press, Sage & Springer) and the user interface for the combined collections is provided by OhioLINK. Oxford Reference Online (Using this resource; all full-text; XLinks) is a cross-searchable database of more than 125 quick reference dictionaries and 189 in-depth encyclopedias. It covers general reference as well as specific subject categories: archaeology, art and architecture, bilingual dictionaries, classical studies, encyclopedias, English dictionaries and thesauri, history, language reference, law, linguistics, literature, media studies, medicine and health, music, names studies, performing arts, philosophy, quotations, religion, science and technology, social sciences, and society and culture. All subject categories can be searched separately. Reference types include overview pages, subject reference, timelines, quotations, English dictionaries, and bilingual dictionaries. Journal Identification & Review Databases

Cabell's Directories provides full-text directory information for business, education, psychology/psychiatry, and computer science/information systems journal publications. Each journal entry includes submission information (editor’s name, address, phone, fax, email, web address); publication guidelines (manuscript length, copies required, format, fees, style, computer submission); circulation data (reader type, frequency, number of subscribers, publisher, price); review information (type of reveiws, number of in-house and external reviewers, acceptance rate, time it takes to review, percent of invited articles, reviewers coments, publishing fees); manuscript topics included; and manuscript guidelines. To begin searching click Member Area in the menubar. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by Cabell Publishing, Inc.

Journal Citation Reports (alternative link; 2006-present) is one of the databases included in Web of Knowledge. Click Select a Database to search it separately. This databases permits users to evaluate and compare journals using 2006 citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals form more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. The science edition contains data from over 5,900 journals and the social science edition over 1,700 journals. It can show you the most frequently cited journals in a field, the highest impact journals in a field and the largest journals in a field. Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals. It is produced by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) and the user interface is provided by Thomson.

MLA Directory of Periodicals lists over 4,400 periodicals in the areas of literature, covered in the MLA International Bibliography. It provides print and electronic availability, contact information, subscription information, advertising rates, publishing information (scope and subjects covered), and information about submissions for publication. It is produced by the Modern Language Association of America and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

Ulrich's Periodicals Directory (full-text directory information) contains information on currently published as well as discontinued periodicals. It includes magazines, journals, newsletters, newspapers, conference proceedings, and electronic publications. Each entry includes a description, publisher, country of publication, ISSN, start year, status (active or inactive), price, frequency, ending issue, if refereed, format (print or electronic), if abstracted or indexed, where abstracted or indexed, language, editor, URL, and reviews. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by R.R. Bowker.

To Check Electronic Journals Available Online

JOURNALS @ XU (Electronic Journal Locator & more!) (EBSCO A to Z) contains all of the electronic journals in most of the library's research databases and full-text journal collections, as well as journals Xavier has in paper format and electronic books. Search for a particular journal title using title begins with, title contains, or exact match. Browse for a journal using the alphabetical display or search for a journal by subject category. Advanced search permits searches by publisher, ISSN, and subjects. Truncate words with an asterisk (*) to retrieve word variants. Results provide links to the research database(s) or electronic journal collection(s) that index the journal and include the years covered and embargo period (if there is one). If the journals is not available in electronic format, it provides links to XPLORE for print and microform holdings, and if the journal is not at Xavier in any format it provides links to ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan). Instructions are available for accessing articles within databases and from bibliographies. It is compiled by and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

ACM Digital Library (all full-text; RefWorks help; XLinks; title list) includes ACM journals, proceedings and SIG newsletters. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM).

Electronic Journal Center (about 1995-present; updates dependent upon publisher; all full-text; RefWorks help; XLinks; saving searches) is a multidisciplinary collection of about 5,000 journals published by Academic Press, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society, American Psychological Association (PsycARTICLES), Association of Computing Machinery, Berkeley Electronic Press, BioOne, Blackwell, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Emerald (MCB University Press), Ingenta, Institute of Physics, Kluwer, Lawrence Erlbaum, Optical Society of America, Oxford University Press, Project MUSE, Royal Society of Chemistry, Springer-Verlag, Thieme and Wiley. Scholars can be notified by email about new relevant articles according to subject, author or journal title. It is compiled by and the user interface is provided by OhioLINK.

JSTOR (1st issue of 1st volume to 3 years from present; all full-text; Video tutorial; Handout tutorial; RefWorks help; XLinks; title list) provides online access to back issues of selected scholarly journals in a variety of academic disciplines including the arts, business, demographic studies, humanities, social sciences, and science. The multidisciplinary arts & sciences collection was updated in June 2009 with an additional 120 titles, bringing the total number of journals in this collection to 749. JSTOR also includes 8,200 19th Century British pamphlets. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by JSTOR, a not-for-profit organization that serves and is supported by the scholarly community. NOTE: journal content published prior to 1923 in the US and prior to 1870 elsewhere is freely available to the public for reading and downloading (nearly 500.000 articles from more than 200 journals).

ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source (Formerly ProQuest Nursing Journals; 1986-present; all full-text; RefWorks help; XLinks; title list) offers the full-text of 444 nursing and related publications. Special resource links on the home page includes Evidence Summaries, Systematic Reviews, and Best Practice Information Sheets from the Joanna Briggs Institute. There are also cultural competency briefs by religion and ethnicity as well as 75 video training programs. Study paths permit users to view full-text articles recommended by a board of experienced nurse educators on topics relevant to the typical nursing curriculum in practical and registered nursing. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by ProQuest.

Audiovisual Materials Identification & Review Databases

Children's Technology Review (CTE) (1985-present; updated monthly; full-text reviews) provides access to 7,200 reviews published in the print and electronic versions of this journal. All interactive children's media including educational and entertainment CD-ROMs, children's video games, children's Internet sites and smart toys (toys with interactive electronic capabilities) are review by educational psychologists. CTE reviews media for children from birth to 15 years of age. Entries include the rating, publisher, publisher's website address and telphone number, copyright date, computer platform(s) that can be used, price, grade level, age range, educational objectives, purchase links, the review and the date of the review. Formerly titled, Children's Software & New Media Revue, it is produced by and the user interface is provided by Active Learning Associates, Inc. This subscription is limited to 1 concurrent user. Educational Films & Documentaries (XLinks; formerly the Digital Video Collection) is part of OhioLINK's Digital Resource Commons and contains 1,976 full-length educational films and documentaries covering a wide variety of subjects. The collection currently includes videos from two distributors: Ambrose Video and Films for the Humanities & Sciences. For PC users Real Media Alternative is required to view videos; for MAC users Real Media Player is required to view videos. It is compiled by and the user interface is provided by OhioLINK.

Facets Video is a source for world cinema on video.
