Selected databases. Use to find articles on a topic.
There are many databases which are useful for your topic, however I suggest
you start with the History Resource Center..
History
Resource Center
The best thing to search in the History Resource Center is to do a chronology
search. You move the mouse along a timeline and select a time period to look at.
You will be given a list of domestic events and a worldview. Click on the link
to one of the domestic events. Then click on the link to related subjects in the
top left hand side of the page. You will then get links to reference materials,
primary sources, periodicals and images on that topic.
Academic
Search Premier
To help you with searching this database, I have saved a search on Academic Search
Premier. Click on the link to Academic Search Premier. Click on the blue tab in
the top left hand side for advanced search. Click on the blue tab under the search
box which says Search History/Alerts. Click on the tab which says retrieve searches/alerts.
At the log in screen type user name of davies and password of davies. Click on
the link to Fairfield main. You will now bring up a list of searches in Ebsco.
Click on the link to show all results. Click on the ?? in the results column to
retrieve the search under the topic that you are most interested in.
America: History and
Life
saved search
text file. Click on this link and save the search to
a disk or to the hard drive of your computer. Then click
on the link to America: History and Life. Click on the
link on the left hand side to run saved search. Click
on browse to find the txt. file either on your disk
or on your hard drive. Click the upload and execute
search button. When the search is loaded, click on view
all results sets. Just click on your topic to see the
results found in this database. Click on any article
that you are interested in. Click on Find a copy to
see if it is available electronically or whether we
have the paper copy of this journal.
American
Periodical Series
Click on the searches below in the American Periodicals Series. The full text
articles in this database go up to 1940. When you click on the links below, click
on the search button and you will bring up the articles on this topic.
JSTOR
When searching JSTOR, select history journals before you enter your search
term. Results are given in relevancy order. There are many full text articles
in JSTOR so it is important to try and be as specific as possible. When you find
a result that you like, click on either the print or download tab to get the full
article.
New
York Times Historical Database
There is a huge amount of information in the New York Times Historical Database.
It is important therefore to put in dates when you search for a topic, otherwise
you will just get far too many articles. If you are not sure of the dates of your
topic, then look at the timeline in the History
Resource Center; it gives dates.
Articles not available at the Xavier Library can be ordered through
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Loan. Fill out an article request form for each
article that you want, filling in all the information.
Online request forms are available
from the Library’s home
page or print forms are available at the Reference Desk. Remember it can
take 1-2 weeks to get an article through this service.
