Academic Search premier is a general database which is useful for finding information on popular culture in the 20th century for both the United States and Great Britain.

America: History and Life

America: History and Life database contains information on the history of the United States. Some useful subject search terms are:

You can select the time period of the 20th century.

American Periodical Series
In American Periodicals Series the full text articles in this database go up to 1940. When you do a search select the time period of 01/01/1900 to 12/31/1940. You can choose all publication types or you can select specific kinds of journals such as scholarly journals.

Annals of American History

Annals of American History is a full-text database which you can search by timeline or by keyword. There are documents and images and multimedia clips.

Book Review Digest

You can search for book reviews under different topics in this database.

Electronic Journal Center

The Electronic Journal Center is a database of full-text journals. Your results are returned to you in relevancy order.

Historical Abstracts

Historical Abstracts is the best database to go to for information on Great Britain. This database covers history in countries other than the United States. Below are some suggested subject searches.

The History Resource Center covers mainly United States History. Listed below are sample subject searches in this database. The search brings you to reference material, journal articles, primary documents and maps and images.

Cold War

JSTOR
When searching JSTOR, select history journals before you enter your search term. Results are given in relevancy order. There are many full text articles in JSTOR so it is important to try and be as specific as possible. When you find a result that you like, click on either the print or download tab to get the full article.

New York Times Historical Database
There is a huge amount of information in the New York Times Historical Database. It is important therefore to put in dates when you search for a topic, otherwise you will just get far too many articles.

Articles not available at the Xavier Library can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Loan.  Fill out an article request form for each article that you want, filling in all the information. 

Online request forms are available from the Library's home page or print forms are available at the Reference Desk. Remember it can take 1-2 weeks to get an article through this service.
