Databases

America: History and Life (new user interface; 1964-present; updated quarterly; some full-text; video tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks; title list) indexes and abstracts about 2,000 periodicals published worldwide in history, related humanities and the social sciences. It covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. It includes citations to journal articles, book reviews and relevant dissertations. Users can search cited references and browse Clio Notes, chronologies and brief summaries of significant events and themes in American history. It is produced by ABC-CLIO and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

Historical Abstracts (new user interface; 1955-present; updated 3 times per year; some full-text; video tutorials; RefWorks help; XLinks) indexes and abstracts over 2,000 international historical journals. It also includes selected journals in the social sciences and humanities. It covers history from 1450 to the present, but excludes US and Canadian history. Users can search cited references and browse Clio Notes, chronologies and brief summaries of significant events and themes in world history. It is produced by ABC-CLIO and the user interface is provided by EBSCO Publishing.

History Resource Center (much full-text; podcasts; XLinks) provides integrated access to over 1,000 historical (primary) documents, more than 30,000 reference articles, and over 65 full-text journals covering themes, events, individuals, and periods in U.S. history from pre-colonial times to the present. It includes access to citations for over 180 additional history journals. This database includes podcasts (audio files). To listen follow the on-screen insrtructions. Be patient while the podcast downloads. It is produced by Thomson-Gale and the user interface is provided by InfoTrac.

North American Women's Letters & Diaries (Colonial -1950; all full-text; XLinks) includes the immediate experiences of 1,325 women and 150,000 pages of diaries and letters. Materials have been carefully chosen using leading bibliographies, supplemented by more than 7,000 pages of previously unpublished material. The collection also includes biographies and an extensive annotated bibliography of the sources in the database. Users can search by authors, source, year, place, historical event and personal event. The showcase provides page images of selected diaries and letters. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by Alexander Street Press in collaboration with the University of Chicago.

World News Digest (1940-present; updated daily; all full-text; XLinks) allows users to search the top international news stories and overviews of historical events from 1940 to the present. It also provides editorial cartoons, country profiles, anniversaries of the month, newsmaker profiles, obituaries from 1980-2005, presidential elections highlights from 1940-2004, newspaper editorials, issues in the news, historical documents and heads of state and governmental leaders. Special features include What Happened That Day, maps and photographs. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by Facts on File.

Chicano Database (1960's-present; updated quarterly; some full-text; RefWorks help) indexes over 2,400 journals and other materials. It covers Mexican-American topics, including Chicanos, Latinos, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants. Subjects covered include art, bilingual education, education, health, history, labor, language, literature, mental health an politics. It is produced by the Ethnic Studies Library, University of California, and the user interface is provided by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center).

CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online) (1991-present; updated monthly and weekly; much full-text; XLinks) indexes books, journals, working papers, occasional papers, case studies, and conference proceedings. It covers theory and research in international affairs and includes policy briefs, economic indicators, research projects, links to Internet resources, schedule of events, maps, and country data. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by Columbia University Press.

Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI) (1970-present; some full-text) indexes 400 international social science and humanities journals. It contains bibliographic citations for articles, book reviews, documents, original literary works, and other materials. It covers Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the United States-Mexico border region, and Hispanics in the United States. It includes analyses of current political, economic, and social issues and Latin American arts and letters. It is produced by and the user interface is provided by the UCLA Latin American Center.

Nineteenth Century Masterfile (NCM) (1802-1920; updated quarterly; no full-text) was formerly called Poole's Plus and covers the 19th century. It indexes periodicals, books, newspapers, and government documents. It includes the Poole's Index to Periodical Literature (1802-1906), Jones and Chipman's Index to Legal Periodical Literature (1786-1922), the Psychological Index (1894-1905), Richardson' Index to Periodical Articles in Religion (1890-1899), Stead's Index to Periodicals (1890-1906), Cumulative Index to Selected List of Periodicals (1896-1899), Catalog of Scientific Papers - Mechnaics, Physics, Mathematics (1800-1900), New Yort Times Index (1863-1905), New York Daily Tribune Index (1875-1906), Palmer's Index to the Times (1880-1890), Index to the Oregon Spectator (1846-1854). It is produced by and the user interface is provided by Paratext Resource.

LexisNexis Academic (all full-text; RefWorks help) covers a wide variety of subjects including law, government, international affairs, politics, current events, business and medicine. Legal research provides federal and state cases, Shepard's citations, federal and state codes, tax law, Canadian court cases and legislation, law reviews, and patents. Business research allows users to create company profiles, lists, and comparisons, as well as SEC filings, account and country profiles. Company reports can be created and data can be downloaded into spreadsheets. The People tab allows users to find obituaries, elected officials, and industry contacts. New York Times Historical Database (1851-within four years of the present; all full-text; updated annually; RefWorks help; XLinks) contains full-page and article images of every page of every issue, cover to cover, in downloadable PDF. It includes ads, comics, cartoons, photos, maps and other graphics. It is produced by the New York Times and the user interface is provided by ProQuest.

Times (London) Digital Archive (1785-1985; all full-text; XLinks) permits users to search using keywords or hit-term highlighting to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos. It is produced by The Times and the user interface is provided by Thomson/Gale's InfoTrac. This subscription is limited to 2 simultaneous users.

Electronic Journals

Electronic Journal Center (about 1995-present; updates dependent upon publisher; all full-text; RefWorks help; XLinks; saving searches) is a multidisciplinary collection of about 5,000 journals published by Academic Press, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society, American Psychological Association (PsycARTICLES), Association of Computing Machinery, Berkeley Electronic Press, BioOne, Blackwell, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Emerald (MCB University Press), Ingenta, Institute of Physics, Kluwer, Lawrence Erlbaum, Optical Society of America, Oxford University Press, Project MUSE, Royal Society of Chemistry, Springer-Verlag, Thieme and Wiley. Scholars can be notified by email about new relevant articles according to subject, author or journal title. It is compiled by and the user interface is provided by OhioLINK.

JSTOR (1st issue of 1st volume to 3 years from present; all full-text; RefWorks help; XLinks; title list) provides online access to back issues of selected scholarly journals in a variety of academic disciplines including the arts, business, demographic studies, humanities, social sciences, and science.
