General Policy

The library is primarily concerned with meeting the scholastic needs of undergraduate and graduate students. The library also recognizes that faculty have scholarly research interests, and we attempt to meet those needs whenever possible. The library will provide materials that support course design and course preparation. Special attention is given to collection assessment prior to an accreditation review.

Consortia

Xavier University Library participates in three consortia that, in effect, increase the holdings of the library. Most consortia permit easy online access to their collections, rapid delivery of materials, up-to-date holdings information, and free circulation/interlibrary loan to consortia members.

Department allocations

Each academic department receives an allocation for books and audiovisual materials for the fiscal year. The library also determines the allocation of budgeted monies that each academic department may use for new journal subscriptions. Information about the department's allocation is sent to the faculty liaison at the beginning of the year. They also receive a monthly report of their department's expenditures throughout the year.

Library liaison program

Open communication between collection development and academic departments is provided through the library liaison program. Library liaisons work with their respective departments in journal collection development for existing as well as new courses and programs.
