Graduates of Xavier University who have a valid Alumni All Card may access many of the library's resources and services. Please review the library's Notice of Responsible Use.

Borrowing Materials

Alumni may borrow materials available in the XPLORE and OhioLINK library catalogs; materials may be requested online. See circulation for information about borrowing privileges. For materials not available through Xavier or OhioLINK, see resource sharing.

Library Databases

The library provides off-campus access to several research databases for alumni use only.  To access these databases, you will need an alumni all-card.  Click here for instructions on how to log in to the databases.

Academic Search Alumni Edition
Provides access to over 2,680 full text journals in a wide range of subject areas, of which 2,320 are peer-reviewed journals.  Also includes access to citations from over 13,000 journals.  Produced by Ebsco Information Services.

Business Source Alumni Edition
Provides access to nearly 1,350 full-text business magazines and journals, of which 659 are peer-reviewed. Additional full-text sources include country economic reports, industry reports, market research reports, company profiles and more.   Produced by Ebsco Information Services.

Business Book Summaries
Provides concise summaries of  leading business books.  Each summary provides an overview of the books contents and key concepts.   Nearly 1,200 titles are currently available with more than 60 new titles added each year.  Produced by Ebsco Information Services.

Newspaper Source
Provides cover-to-cover full text for more than 40 national and international newspapers. The database also contains selective full text for more than 330 regional (U.S.) newspapers.  In addition, full-text television and radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, CNN, CNN International, & NPR, among others.  Produced by Ebsco Information Services.

Additional Open Access Databases
Provides free access via the Internet to resources such as Xavier publications (Newswire, Yearbook, etc.) , government databases (PubMed, ERIC, etc.), historical Ohio collections (Art & Architecture at University of Cincinnati, Fremont Messenger, etc.), and many others. Some of these resources are temporarily unavailable as new institutional repository platforms are investigated.

On-Campus Access

Alumni with a valid Alumni All Card may obtain a daily visitor computer login at the Connection Center in the CLC. With your login, you will be able to access more library databases than the off-campus alumni databases. Internet access is available on the public workstations in the McDonald Library and the Conaton Learning Commons (CLC).  Printing is available. Wireless access with a personal laptop is available; contact the Connection Center for more information.

University Archival Collections

Electronic collections such as research databases, electronic full-text journals, and electronic books, may be accessed only in the library. The library's XPLORE catalog may be accessed in the library and from off-campus locations.

Athenaeum (1912-1919; all full-text) is a searchable electronic archive of the Athenaeum, a publication featuring original poetry, short stories, essays, text of orations, editorials, news, reports, and graphic artwork by students from St. Xavier College in Cincinnati, Ohio. Intended both as a news and literary publication, this work covering over 1700 pages is of historical significance in reporting the early years of St. Xavier College at the Avondale location. It was scanned in 2010 from microfilm copies. Users can browse individual issues and years or search the full-text content. The microfilm version is housed in the library’s archives. The digital Athenaeum is published by Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, and the user interface is provided by CONTENTdm. Browse by Date.

Edgecliff College Newspaper (1935-1980; all full-text) contains the entire content in digital format of the Edgecliff College student newspaper. Edgecliff College, formerly Our Lady of Cincinnati College, merged with Xavier University in 1980. The newspaper contains over 1,200 pages and chronicles the everyday life and general activities of students. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) files. It was scanned in 2010 from microfilm copies. Users can browse individual issues and years or search the full-text content. Edgecliff College Yearbook (1970-1972 & 1978-1979; all full-text) contains the entire content in digital format of the Edgecliff College Yearbook. Edgecliff College, formerly Our Lady of Cincinnati College, merged with Xavier University in 1980. The five yearbooks contain a total of 650 pages and depict students and activities at the college for this period of time. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe’s Portable Document Format). It was scanned in 2010 from microfilm copies. Users can browse individual issues and years or search the full-text content. The microfilm version is housed in the library’s archives. XU Digital Course Catalogs (1840-present; all full-text) contains the entire content in digital format of the St. Xavier College and Xavier University course catalogs ( also known as the Bulletin, Calendar, or Catalogue). In addition to course, program and degree information, the course catalogs contain information about admission, registration, university history and mission, awards, scholarships, financial aid, administration, faculty, tuition and fees, endowment, building construction, facilities, accreditation, policies, and regulations, as well as the academic calendar and schedule of courses. XU Digital Student Newspaper (1915-1 year from present; all full-text) contains the entire content in digital format of Xavier University's student newspaper, The Newswire. The student newspaper reports on key historical events and gives students' reflections and viewpoints on events of national and local importance, such as the death of President Kennedy and the nation at war in the 1940s. The voice of change throughout Xavier's history, the newspaper documents the merger of Edgecliff College, the effects of coeducation, and the introduction of computers on campus. Most importantly the newspaper chronicles everyday life and general activities, from athletic achievements on the field to Xavier's Centennial celebration. The newspaper collection was scanned in 2007 from microfilm copies. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format). XU Digital Photographs is a pilot project featuring digital images from the university archives of participating AJCU (Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities) institutions. University archives typically serve as the chief historical resource for materials about a university, its people, programs and culture. Xavier University's contributions to the pilot AJCU collection include 11 historical photographs depicting alumni activities, a historical campus view, general science classes, Bellarmine Chapel dedication, the journey of St. Francis Xavier mural, and the Union Building cafeteria. Each digital image includes a title, repository, original and copyright dates, description, thumbnail and larger images, subjects and contributor. The XU Digital Photographs are published by Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, and the user interface is provided by CONTENTdm.

XU Digital Yearbooks (1924-2005; all full-text) contains the full-text of Xavier University's student yearbook. Named after the University's mascot, the Musketeer, the yearbook was published from 1924 to 2005 with several gaps in publication: no yearbooks were published from 1943-1946 due to World War II and yearbooks were not published in 1972-1973 or 1988-1989. The yearbook ceased publication in 2005 due to a lack of student interest and poor sales. The yearbooks chronicle every academic year with text and pictures of students, faculty, and events, with occasional sections on world events. The yearbooks constitute a pictorial history of the Xavier University campus, its students, administrators and faculty. It is an especially rich source for understanding student life and activities, including academics, honor societies, clubs, student government, performances, publications, debates & oratoricals, contests & awards, proms & balls, homecomings, intramural sports and athletics. The yearbook collection was scanned in 2006 from original print copies housed in the Xavier University Library. The digital version is provided in searchable PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format). Users can browse and/or search all volumes, individual years or the full-text content. The print version of the yearbook is available in the library's reference and special collections; the microfilm version is housed in the library's archives. XU Faculty Publications & Presentations (1993 to about 1 year from present; all full-text) contains bibliographic information for faculty publications, presentations, and other scholarship published and presented during a five-year period for every participating college, school, and academic and administrative departments at Xavier University. See also Faculty Scholarship collections under individual college and department communities in Digital Space. Users can browse the collections by date or search for a faculty member by keyword. Faculty publications and presentations is published under the title, Scholarly Presentations, by the Office of the Academic Vice President & Provost, Division of Academic Affairs, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Scholarly Presentations is compiled and made accessible by the University Library, Division of Information Technologies, Xavier University. XU History Texts & Chronologies (all full-text) contains the entire content in digital format of three important books about the history of Xavier University: Xavier University: Vidit Mirabilia Magna: 125 Years of Unchanging Vision (1831-1956) by Rev. Paul L. O'Connor, S. J.; Continuity and Change: Xavier University, 1831-1981 by Rev. Lee J. Bennish, S. J.; and To See Great Wonders: A History of Xavier University, 1831-2006. Other texts and documents include the anonymous The Athenaeum and After: A Glimpse at the Early History of St. Xavier College published in 1916; Chronology: Athenaeum - St. Xavier College - Xavier University by Rev. J. Peter Buschmann, S. J. published in 1975; The Society of Jesus: A Century in Cincinnati by Rev. Robert E. Manning, S. J. published in 1940; and Undying Troth: A Chronicle of Xavier University by James M. Powell published in 1956. They were produced by Xavier University and the user interface is provided by OhioLINK's Digital Resource Center.

XU Oral Histories (audio, video, images and full-text) contains oral histories and related other materials of selected Xavier University administrators and faculty (John Hart, M. S.; Richard J. Garascia, Ph. D.; and Vytautas J. Bieliauskas, Ph.D.)The oral histories were conducted by Thomas P. Kennealy, S. J., Xavier University Archivist, and Timothy McCabe, Archives Librarian. Videotapes were created by Tina Meagher, Coordinator of Video and Digital Media at Xavier University. They were produced by Xavier University and the user interface is provided by OhioLINK's Digital Resource Center.

XU Presidents (images and full-text) contains photographs and brief biographical information about the presidents of St. Xavier College and Xavier University. Biographical information for presidents serving between 1840 and 1911 was anonymously published in installments in The Xavier Athenaeum from February to December, 1916. They were produced by Xavier University and the user interface is provided by OhioLINK's Digital Resource Center.
