This year, the Learning Assistance Center is piloting a new program, known as coaching. The Director, Ann Dinan, and the Assistant Director, Stephanie Mosier, are being trained as professional coaches through The Coaches Training Institute (CTI), which is widely recognized as the industry leader in the area of coaching.
Coaching is NOT counseling, but a supportive alliance between the coach and the student, whereby the student is in the driver's seat. The coach uses the skills of listening, asking, and challenging; she does not advise or instruct. In the university setting, coaching focuses on the student's academic goals, emphasizing their grades and career decisions. It gives students who are struggling the opportunity to examine their own resources and strengths. With the guidance of a coach, these students will be able to implement the necessary changes to achieve their desired success.
During the initial training period in the 2004-2005 academic year, the Director and Assistant Director of the LAC will meet with students who are in academic need of coaching. These students will receive 30-60 minutes of coaching per week. Additionally, a great deal of time will be spent talking with professors, parents, advisors, and members of other university divisions.
We are very excited about implementing this new program, and we would be happy to answer questions or give you more information about coaching. Feel free to contact us at 745-3280.
New Faces at the L.A.C.
You may have noticed a couple new faces at the Learning Assistance Center. New members of the full time staff include Karen Lyons and Stephanie Mosier. In June, Karen, former Administrative Assistant for Sarah Kelly, joined our staff as the administrative assistant. Stephanie, a 2001 Xavier graduate and past tutor at the Center, became Assistant Director last April.
We also have many new tutors joining our office. The LAC trained new tutors on Saturday, August 28. For the first time, the LAC now provides tutoring in ASL, Microbiology, Physiological Chemistry, and Pathophysiology. We look forward to serving Xavier students and expanding our tutoring services.
New Test Delivery and Return Policy
This academic year, the LAC has implemented a few changes to our testing policies. We would like to bring these changes to your attention, so that you can plan accordingly. Student delivery is no longer an option. We also prefer not to have tests sent through campus mail. The professor, or someone designated by the professor, may hand deliver the test to our office on the first floor of Kuhlman. Test can also be faxed to us at 745-3387, or emailed to Stephanie Mosier, Assistant Director, at mosier@xavier.edu.
Additionally, sometimes a test is sent to our office, but the student does not take the test here. Therefore, we have implemented a new test return policy. When a test is delivered to the LAC, we will take note of the date that the test is to be taken. If the student has not come to the LAC to take the test within two weeks of the test date, the test will be returned to the professor.
L.A.C. Hiring New Tutors
For the first time ever, the Learning Assistance Center is hiring tutors mid-semester. We began recruiting at the beginning of October, and will be training our tutors in November. We would like to thank all of the professors who helped with our recruiting efforts! During the fall semester, we have been experiencing a record number of tutoring requests. If you know anybody that you think would be a good tutor, please send their names to Stephanie Mosier at mosier@xavier.edu or call her at 745-3214. Thanks! In the spring, we will be looking for tutors in Organic Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Philosophy, and others.
