International affairs is the study of the relations between sovereign states. It also concerns relations between nation-states and international organizations like the United Nations or the European Union. International affairs investigates the history of the modern state system, analyzes the balance of power, and asks "What are the causes of war? What is the best way to resolve present and future international conflicts? What are the forces at work both within states and between them that shape their foreign policies?"

At present, Xavier offers three concentrations within the major: modern Europe, business, and the third world. International affairs is an ideal major for students who seek challenges in the classroom and who are interested in the larger world around them.
