Mandatory Training for 12 and 15 Passenger Vans

In light of concerns raised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding the use of 12 and 15 passenger vans, the university has determined that any student or employee who drives a 12 or 15 passenger van for university sponsored or related activities must participate in a defensive driver training program. This policy is effective immediately (January 22, 2008) and full compliance is required by June 1, 2008 in order to be authorized to drive a 12 or 15 passenger van.
The Office of Risk Management along with the university's insurance provider, Cincinnati Insurance, offer a classroom training session free of charge for any student or employee who has completed the driver authorization process. In addition, on-road driving time in a 15 passenger van is included in the training and required.

Van Driver Safety Training schedule
Please email riskmanagement@xavier.edu regarding safety trainings during the months of May - June - July. Trainings will resume a normal monthly schedule in August.

Training sessions will be held in Flynn Hall and consist of classroom followed by on-road driving. Please allow up to two hours, though smaller classes will need less time. There is no charge for the training. To register, please email riskmanagement@xavier.edu. Minimum registration requirements must be met. Cancellations will be posted on the Risk Management website www.xavier.edu/insurance.
Students and employees who drive a university-insured vehicle (including leased and rented vehicles) are required to complete the driver authorization process prior to driving for the university. In addition, van driver safety training is mandatory for students and employees prior to driving a 12 or 15 passenger van for university purposes.
