Online and Blended Classes

DEVELOPING AN ONLINE OR BLENDED COURSE

Introduction

Planning to design and teach an online or blended course or just interested in learning more about what's involved? Either way, you've come to the right place. The following information will provide you with an overview of online and blended instruction and the process for developing an online or blended course at Xavier.

The Process

The process for developing an online or blended course is comprised of the following five steps:

  • Completion of the introductory module - Introduction to Blended and Online Instruction
  • Indication of your interest in developing an online or blended course and certification that you have completed the introductory module above with submission of the eLearning Request Form
  • Submission of the eLearning Course Development Proposal Form, which requires discussion with and a signature from your department chair
  • Completion of Introduction to Online Course Design (IOCD), a six-week, fully online training course
  • Completion of the course you are developing, which will take approximately four to five months after IOCD, with the support of the instructional design team
  • Review of the completed course design by a team of faculty members who are experienced online learning practitioners, using the heuristic checklist for quality online courses

Enrollment in the IOCD course is limited. Currently, we are prioritizing development of courses for the following areas:

  1. Summer 2014 courses
  2. Courses for non-traditional students (CAPS)
  3. Courses for new, wholly online programs currently approved by Xavier and awaiting HLC approval
