Xavier University is a Jesuit Catholic institution located 10 miles from the city of Cincinnati. Enrollment is 6,966 (4,228 undergraduate, 2,738 graduate.) The University encompasses eleven graduate programs including a doctorate program in psychology and over sixty-five undergraduate majors in three colleges.
In accordance with the Xavier University Mission Statement and the mission of the Division of Student Life and Leadership, the Office of Residence Life seeks to assist in the development of the total person and recognizes residence hall living as an integral part of the student's educational process. Residence hall living at Xavier creates the opportunity for students to feel a sense of belonging, acquire new skills, gain self-responsibility and integrate knowledge obtained both inside and outside of the classroom.
A Hall Director is a full time professional staff member in the Office of Residence Life. As a live-in staff member, the Hall Director is a key person in carrying out the mission of the department. The quality of the Hall Director's efforts bears significantly and directly upon the quality of life experienced by all members of the residence hall community.
Xavier University houses approximately 2000 students in four co-ed residence halls and five apartment complexes. The Residence Life staff is comprised of a Director, and Associate Director, an Assistant Director, a Residential Systems Manager, a Clerical Support Staff person, four Hall Directors, and forty-nine Resident Assistants. Additionally, four Jesuits-in-Residence, and a Faculty-in-Residence complete our staff. The Hall Directors report to the Associate Director of Residence Life.
A Hall Director is responsible for developing and administering a comprehensive residence life program in a hall housing 214-598 students. Included in this responsibility is the following:
•Coordinate the administrative, management and personnel functions of a residence hall.
•Developmentally supervise a Resident Assistant staff of 8-13 members. This includes creating a unified team, providing individual supervision and feedback, training and scheduling.
•Oversee all programming efforts of a residence hall. Programming focuses on the developmental needs of residential groups and is guided by the mission of the University. Faculty involvement and diversity education is highly encouraged.
•Assist the Physical Plant staff in creating a safe, comfortable environment by communicating maintenance and custodial concerns and actively addressing hall damage.
•Maintain a high level of student contact, visibility and availability.
•Provide counseling and referral for individual students with academic, career or personal concerns.
•Serve as a University discipline officer, redirecting students' behavior and taking advantage of the opportunity to educate.
•Recruit, advise, and promote the hall programming board.
•Provide leadership and/or assistance to system-wide projects for the Office of Residence Life including RA Staff Recruitment & Selection, RA Staff Training, and advisement of Resident Student Association.
•Rotate on-call "duty" nights and weekends with other professional staff members.
•Communicate effectively with parents, faculty and administrators as it relates to students' well-being. Significant interactions will take place between the Hall Director and members of Campus Police, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Learning Assistance Program, the Office of Student Success and Retention, Campus Ministry and the Health and Wellness Center.
•Assist with summer operations including summer school, summer conferences, supervision of Summer Conference Assistants/Summer RAs, and the planning and preparation for the next academic year.
•Other duties as assigned.
To qualify as a Hall Director at Xavier it is preferred that one has previous residence life experience. A Master's degree in Student Personnel or a related field is strongly preferred.
The starting date for this twelve-month appointment is immediately. Remuneration includes an annual salary of $27,000 - $29,000, a fully furnished apartment, a meal allowance during the academic year, an excellent benefits package and other University privileges. The furnished apartment includes AC, dishwasher, washer/dryer, cable/satellite, data access, and voicemail. Additionally, Xavier is pet friendly and the HD may have one or two small pets (deposit will be required if HD has pets).
