Xavier University invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the Williams College of Business (WCB), an AACSB accredited college of business. The Dean of the WCB reports directly to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer.
Founded in 1831, Xavier University is a Jesuit, Catholic university in Cincinnati, Ohio. Xavier is a Comprehensive University. Its three colleges offer 81 undergraduate majors, 45 minors, 22 masters and 1 doctoral program to 6,945 total students, including 4,540 undergraduates. The University is the sixth-oldest Catholic university in the nation and one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities nationwide. The University has been recognized as one of the top 10 universities in the Midwest for the last 17 years by U.S. News & World Report, including a ranking of fourth for 2012.
The WCB Dean will create an environment that fosters entrepreneurial and innovative approaches to new and long-standing challenges at the intersection of higher education and business. She or he will serve as a catalyst to promote economic enterprise and facilitate business creation in Greater Cincinnati, home to the headquarters of ten Fortune 500 companies, and will establish Xavier as a major stakeholder in the emerging regional conversation around creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The WCB Dean will identify opportunities to build, transform and develop high-quality academic programs that fulfill the existing and emerging needs of Cincinnati-based global businesses. The WCB Dean will develop a new strategic plan for the WCB that inspires its constituents and also aligns with the emerging strategic plan for the entire university, and honor and advance its faculty’s teaching and scholarship. She or he will provide coordinated direction and appropriate support for WCB departments, centers and offices to meet common objectives and fulfill their respective missions. In addition, the WCB Dean will create global learning experiences for Xavier students rooted in the Jesuit tradition.
The WCB Dean will work with faculty to identify regions in the world to focus Xavier’s educational and business partnerships. She or he will work effectively with other college and division leaders as a part of an academic administrative team that guides university strategy and collaborates with other deans to build interdisciplinary academic programs and enterprises.
The WCB Dean will serve as an effective ambassador to develop strategic partnerships with local, regional, national and international organizations, businesses, and governments. She or he will also collaborate with colleagues in Development and Alumni Relations to build relationships with alumni and other natural university constituents in support of the WCB and university fundraising efforts.
A successful candidate for the WCB Dean’s position should have the following attributes:
• An earned doctorate and achievements sufficient to merit tenure with appointment, preferably at the rank of full professor.
• Experience in academic administration.
• An understanding of, respect for and commitment to advance the ideals, values and heritage of a Jesuit, Catholic institution.
• Ability to articulate a common and compelling vision for an organizational entity, to establish clear goals for the future, and to deploy resources in order to achieve strategic ends.
• Passion for the academic environment with an understanding of its unique constituencies, together with a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate student learning and faculty scholarship.
• Ability to serve as an ambassador to external audiences in business, education, government and other communities in order to form strategic partnerships, create synergies, and leverage existing resources.
• Experience raising philanthropic resources on behalf of an institution of higher education, with a demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward significant contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.
• Familiarity with AACSB accreditation issues and processes, assessment of learning outcomes, and knowledge of current trends and emerging issues in higher education.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• High ethical standards and a deep sense of social responsibility.
• Exemplary cross-cultural skills and understanding, together with a strong commitment to diversity in all of its manifestations.
The students, faculty, and staff of the WCB now inhabit the new Stephen and Dolores Smith Hall, dedicated in 2010. The WCB comprises of six academic Departments, five Centers, an Undergraduate Students’ Office, and an MBA Office. It offers nine undergraduate majors and five minors. In addition, the MBA program is offered through five different tracks to provide flexibility for prospective students. The WCB currently enrolls 1,215 students at the undergraduate level, and 833 students in the MBA program.
