Assistant Professor, Classics
The Classics Department at Xavier University, a Jesuit-Catholic institution, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor. Candidates must have a PhD in Classics and the ability to teach Latin and Greek at all levels of undergraduate instruction. Primary training should be philological, but candidates should also demonstrate an understanding of classical antiquity that shows breadth and depth and preparedness to teach courses in classical civilization, drama, and theater. Strong generalists with research interests in Greek tragedy or Greek poetry will be given priority. In addition to teaching duties, candidates are expected to remain active scholars by pursuing a specific research program with a goal of publishing, keeping abreast in the discipline, and participating in professional organizations. Please send dossiers, including letter of application, curriculum vitae, transcripts, a sample publication, three letters of recommendation, and proof of teaching excellence (syllabi, course evaluations, etc.) to: Dr. Shannon N. Byrne, Chair of the Search Committee, Department of Classics, Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45207-5181. To ensure consideration, all materials must be received by November 16, 2009; material submitted electronically should be sent to rose@xavier.edu with “Classics Search” in the subject line. Chosen candidates will be contacted for interviews at the APA meeting in Anaheim. Xavier University is a Jesuit institution in the Catholic tradition with a strong liberal arts core.
