The Legacy of James E. Hoff, S.J.

This div will be replaced

James E. Hoff, S.J., served as president of Xavier University from 1991-2000. Over those nine years—and until his death in 2004—his vision and guidance transformed Xavier, producing lasting changes that are both widespread and deep, and sowing the seeds of the exciting changes currently underway.

Academically, Hoff raised admission standards, created Xavier’s first doctoral program, rewrote the core curriculum, increased freshman retention to 90 percent and developed the weekend degree program for adult students. He also indelibly altered the physical environment, presiding over the restoration of Schmidt, Hinkle and Edgecliff halls, as well as the construction of the Gallagher Student Center, the Commons Apartments and the Cintas Center.

A determined and matchless fundraiser, Hoff willed the University to improve in this area. During his tenure, Xavier’s endowment increased from $24 million to $60 million, and the Century Campaign raised a previously undreamed of $125 million.

Now, five years after his death, Hoff’s vision continues to challenge the University community to envision the loftiest of goals in all things and then to strive to achieve them.
