Pine: evergreen conifer with needles in clusters of 2, 3 or 5.   Naked seeds have been released from old cones, which are brown and open (usually at the end of the second or third year).  New cones are green and tightly closed for the first year or two.  Valued for lumber and wood pulp.  Large pine nuts are valued for cooking.  White pine are native to the Midwest.
