graduate program: Elementary Education

Early Childhood Licensure

To begin the admission process for the early childhood cohort program, the student must meet with an academic advisor for transcript review and discussion of the program. Call 513 745-3701 for an appointment. Please bring an official copy of transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work to this meeting.

Next the student must apply for admission to the M.Ed. in elementary education.

Upon acceptance into the Master of Education program a candidate may begin the required courses listed below

During the semester(s) prior to the beginning of the cohort program, the candidate will complete undergraduate prerequisite courses identified by their advisor.

The three courses that complete the Master of Education Core may be taken at this time as well:

  • EDFD 503 Advanced Education Psychology (3 hrs.)*
  • EDFD 505 Educational Administration (3 hrs.)

** EDFD 507 and EDFD 508 are to be taken simultaneously, and are considered one class.

Provided the general education requirements have been completed by the end of the spring semester, the student may then apply for the cohort beginning in the summer semester of the same year.

Applications for the cohort program are reviewed by a faculty team and evaluated on the basis of the following:

  • EDEL 500 final grade
  • Field work evaluation
  • Grade point average
  • Miller analogies test (MAT) or Graduate Record Exams (GRE) scores
  • Written and Oral Communication Skills

To be considered for admission to the early childhood cohort, students must obtain a special application from the office of graduate services or the education office, (both are located in Elet hall). Students must also meet with Mary Lisa Vertuca (mailto:vertuca@xavier.edu) for their application to be considered. Students should plan to apply the spring before the summer semester that they wish to start.
