Center for Teaching Excellence

The Faculty Fellows Program is one of the major initiatives of the Center for Teaching Excellence, in cooperation with other centers and groups at Xavier. Fellows spend a summer and one semester working on a project that will significantly impact curriculum, teaching, scholarship, and/or other academic activities at Xavier and within the field of higher education. In addition to furthering specific efforts in their respective areas, the fellows will be leaders in engaging other faculty members in constructive dialogue about Xavier’s future. It is expected that the Faculty Fellow will disseminate results of the project internally, across faculty and academic departments, as well as externally, where appropriate.

For 2012-2013, the CTE is again hosting three faculty fellows.

  • Conway Fellow for Jesuit Education (sponsored by the Conway Institute for Jesuit Education)
  • Faculty Fellow for Expanding a Faculty Learning Community Project
  • Faculty Fellow for Student Engagement: Implementing the AAC&U’s High-Impact Educational Practices

For 2011-2012, the CTE hosted three faculty fellows.

  • Conway Fellow for Jesuit Education
  • Faculty Fellow for International Education
  • Faculty Fellow for Sustainability

In 2010, the CTE designated three faculty fellows, who were chosen after an open call for applications.

  • Conway Fellow for Jesuit Education
  • Faculty Fellow for Community-Engaged Learning
  • Faculty Fellow for Sustainability

For the 2010-2011 academic year, Jennifer Beste (Theology) was named the Conway Fellow; Christine Anderson (History) was named the Faculty Fellow for Community-Engaged Learning, and Kathleen Smythe (History) was named the Faculty Fellow for Sustainability. Abstracts of each project are available here.

Each fellowship is also associated with another Xavier center or group. The Conway Fellow is associated with the Conway Institute for Jesuit Education, and it was funded by a grant from the Ruth J. and Robert A. Conway Family Foundation. The 2010-2011 Community-Engaged Learning Fellow is associated with the Eigel Center for Community Engaged Learning, the Sustainability Fellow is associated with the Xavier University Sustainability Committee, and the 2011-2012 International Education Fellow is associated with the Center for International Education.

The Conway Fellowship will be offered annually. The CTE expects to offer two additional faculty fellowships annually, with topics rotating.
