One thing that you hear repeatedly around the country is the fact that there is a teacher shortage. Programs are developed to find new teachers to fill these vacancies. Many people state repeatedly this, while most people do not know the reality, there is actually no general teacher shortage. There are shortages in some specific subject areas as well as shortages in certain geographic areas.
The reason I thought of this for this morning's blog is a situation in New York City. The school system has 829 teachers in the reserve pool and 529 teaching vacancies in the city, you can read about this here. While you might see that figure and saw, great they have more teachers than they need for the classrooms, here is the scary part, each of those 829 teachers are receiving full pay and benefits, even though they are not working full time. There is a great deal more to this situation than I can recast for you here, but the to the title for today, how can we say there is a teacher shortage if we have some areas that have an over supply of teachers?
