Computer Science

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science! Xavier has had a major in computer science since 1975. While the program continues to evolve, our primary goal remains unchanged. We want to provide an educational environment in which students can develop their abilities to undertake intellectually demanding tasks in computer science. Both of our programs support Xavier's mission by emphasizing critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the precise expression of ideas in the respective languages of the two disciplines.

With introductory classes of sizes in the 20s and smaller upper level classes, individual attention and faculty expertise are readily available. Each student in our department receives individual counseling from members of the department. The faculty believe that the best teaching can be done only when there is close faculty-student interaction for discussion, thinking, and exploring.

Students majoring in computer science study the scientific and mathematical principles underlying computer hardware, computer systems, programming and the design and analysis of algorithms. These same areas are also explored in a hands-on manner that encourages students to become competent practitioners in the field. Demand for professionals in computer science continues to increase as uses for computer technology expand.
