Dear Sophomore & Junior Parents

Fall at Xavier University is an exciting time. The entire community returns to campus?swapping stories from vacations and sharing laughs during the beginning week of classes.

Another exciting occurrence in the fall is the number of students who move into off-campus housing. They rent houses in the neighborhoods surrounding Xavier. Many students view this move off-campus as a right of passage. The move challenges us to be more independent, but with that independence come responsibilities.

Students begin searching for next year?s housing early this fall. Personally, I began looking at houses in late August of my sophomore year, and my roommates and I signed our lease in the middle of October. As typical students do, my roommates and I considered the number of bedrooms, the distance from campus, and the available space for activities. However, another criteria should be included?fire safety. Last January, two students from our crosstown rival the University of Cincinnati died in a fire in an off-campus house.

Though students may no longer be in Xavier housing, Xavier still wants to encourage safe housing choices.  Xavier University, University of Cincinnati, and local municipalities have formed a partnership?Cincinnati Safe Student Housing?to promote fire safety initiatives.

As parents, you can have an impact on the safety of your student. To start, before your student signs the lease, ask the landlord about certain features of the house. Does the house have photoelectric smoke alarms? Does each bedroom have multiple exits? Do bedrooms above the third floor have a fire escape or a ladder?

You can schedule a fire inspection appointment. Any tenant or parent may request a free fire safety inspection conducted by the local fire departments. Below are listed the numbers for the Norwood and Cincinnati Fire Departments are listed.

Norwood Fire Department: 513-458-4558
Cincinnati Fire Department: 513-357-7585

To learn more about fire safety, please go to the Fire Safety page on the Commuter Services website (www.xavier.edu/commuter/Fire-Safety.cfm).

Moving off-campus is a wonderful opportunity, and we hope you and your student consider fire safety as you proceed through this process.
