AN
HISTORIC RECORD LABEL - A PROUD NEIGHBORHOOD - A COMMUNITY-ENGAGED
UNIVERSITY
These unique community assets provide the foundation
for a new development called King Studios. Inspired by the legacy
of historic King Records and fueled by the academic investment
and economic development of nearby Xavier University, this one-of-a-kind
facility will be located in Cincinnati’s Evanston community,
in the heart of the Montgomery Road business district. It will
feature the dynamic integration of music and arts education, entrepreneurial
training, and cultural history all under one roof.

To accomplish this, King Studios will comprise 3 distinct yet
interrelated enterprises:
-
THE KING RECORDS EXPERIENCE will be an interactive
space commemorating the unique musical and social contributions
of the legendary King Records. From 1943-1971, owner Syd Nathan
and his racially diverse leadership team discovered an eclectic
assemblage of artists, from Rhythm & Blues greats like James
Brown and Hank Ballard to Country & Western stars like The
Stanley Brothers and Cowboy Copas. The King Records Experience
will bring some of these early influences back to life.
-
THE
KING STUDIOS RECORDING CENTER will be a facility devoted
to the preservation of the eclectic musical heritage of King
Records. The studio will not only serve as a place for local
musicians to produce their music, but through a unique partnership
with Xavier University it will also cultivate young entrepreneurs
in music recording and arts management in Evanston and other
Cincinnati communities. It will serve as a laboratory for Xavier
students majoring in music and a new arts management program,
and for neighborhood high school students through an entrepreneurial
apprenticeship program.
-
THE FLAVOR OF ART STUDIO is a community arts
center that provides pre-teens/ teens (10-18 yrs old), senior
citizens, and under-served residents from Evanston and surrounding
communities with the opportunity to discover the life-changing
power of creating visual art. The studio promotes community
arts as a resource for education, professional development,
and community building. It will also serve local art teachers
and university students pursuing careers as artists and art
educators.
