COMMUNITY
LEARNING CENTERS
The Cincinnati Public Schools Facilities
Master Plan called for the renovation and building of new,
state-of-the art school buildings. The plan also called
for each school to operate as a Community Learning Center,
a concept that brings schools back to the center of the
community by connecting the assets and resources of the
surrounding neighbors to schools in order to increase student
academic achievement and accomplish community development
objectives. The Community Building Institute
facilitated the community engagement process for the creation
of over 30 Community Learning Centers in neighborhoods through
out Cincinnati. The process involved working with neighborhood
residents, school staff, students and education partner
organizations to create a shared vision for their school
and a plan to accomplish it.
PLACE
MATTERS INITIATIVE
The
United Way of Greater Cincinnati recently launched the Place
Matters Initiative, a place-based investment strategy to
achieve breakthrough change in the Greater Cincinnati neighborhoods
of Avondale, Covington and Price Hill. The United Way turned
to the Community Building Institute to help facilitate the
development and management of community investment plans
in the three neighborhoods. Each investment plan requires
the input and broad participation of neighborhood residents,
associations and institutions.
