Xavier University Library is primarily concerned with meeting the scholastic needs of undergraduate and graduate students. The library also recognizes that faculty have scholarly research interests. However, the size and mission of Xavier University precludes the library from collecting at a university research level. For the permanent collection, the library will subscribe to journals that support courses and programs in academic subject areas. Special attention is given to subscription assessment prior to an accreditation review.
Xavier University Library participates in three consortia that, in effect, increase the holdings of the library. Most consortia permit easy online access to their collections, up-to-date holdings information, rapid delivery of materials, and free interlibrary loans to consortia members.
The library determines the allocation of budgeted monies that each academic department may use for new journal subscriptions.
Open communication between periodicals and academic departments is provided through the library liaison program (see right menu). Library liaisons work with their respective departments in journal collection development for existing as well as new courses and programs.
Journals in print format may loose, bound, or boxed. Back issues of selected titles are in microform format. Some titles have multiple formats, including electronic format.
The current year's issues of a journal are loose and located on the first floor of the McDonald Building. Back issues are bound or boxed and are also located on the second floor immediately following the current year's issues. The microform collection is located in the library annex and can be request using the Document Delivery & Annex Request Form.
The journal collection is non circulating, except to faculty. The faculty loan period for journals is 2 weeks.
