Sourcebook of the World's Religions
Joel Beversluis (Editor)

This anthology of interfaith articles, essays, and resources has a multifold mission: First off, it is a well-presented primer, introducing readers to 20 of the world's religions and spiritual beliefs. Second, this carefully edited collection offers suggestions for becoming a more unified community, one that tolerates and respects the diversity of spiritual beliefs on the planet. Religious Literacy:
What Every American Needs to Know and Doesn't
Stephen Prothero

Stephen Prothero, chair of the religion department at Boston University, begins this valuable primer by noting that religious illiteracy is rampant in the United States, where most Americans, even Christians, cannot name even one of the four Gospels. Such ignorance is perilous because religion "is the most volatile constituent of culture" and, unfortunately, often "one of the greatest forces for evil" in the world, he writes. Possibly the most important aspect of the book, Prothero offers a dictionary of religious literacy and a quiz for readers to test their knowledge. This book can be valuable not only for educators, clergy and government officials, but for all adults in a culture where, as Prothero puts it, "faith without understanding is the standard."

Scripture from World Religious Traditions

God's Breath & God's Light Collections

God's Breath gathers together selections from seven of the world's major wisdom traditions. The writings include excerpts or complete texts of the Book of Genesis, the Tao Te Ching, the Book of Rumi*, the Gospel of John, the Bhagavad Gita, the Qur'an, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Each section has an introdcution by notable contributors including Huston Smith, Karen Armstrong, Reynolds Price, Stephen Mitchell, Marcus Borg, Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, the Dalai Lama, and others.

God’s Light presents the compelling life stories of the key figures from these religious traditions: the Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Arjuna, Muhammad, Rumi*, and Lao Tzu. Each figure is represented by a main profile as well as a briefer preface. Among the notable contributors are Elie Wiesel, Thomas Merton, Marcus Borg, Mother Teresa, and Thich Nhat Hanh.

*For some reason the editors chose to include the Islamic mysitcal tradition known as Sufism distinct from Islam, perhaps because they were looking at "wisdom traditions," and Sufism has a distinct line of wisdom texts.

Bud Heckman and Rori Picker Neiss (Editors)

InterActive Faith, which brings together five original essays filled with case studies on interreligious dialogue, serves as a primer to those who may be new to the movement or find themselves in need of fresh ideas. The volume closes with a brief review of the dozen or so most common world religions, a thorough list of interfaith organizations and a comprehensive bibliography.

Building the Interfaith Youth Movement:
Beyond Dialogue to Action
Eboo Patel and Patrice Brodeur (Editors)

This is known fondly as "the green book" in interfaith circles, and is the first publication of the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC). The IFYC is an organization that focuses on providing service opportunities to youth of different faith traditions, then fascilitating discussion of how their faith influences and speaks to their service and interaction with others. Instead of simply praising its own strategies, it looks to the works of Diana Eck and Grove Harris with the Pluralism Project, Josh Borkin at Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions, what has taken place at Wellesley College and University of Illinois, and many other examples of successful interfaith youth work. It paints the landscape of this relatively new venture, presenting the importance of such a movement and the impact it is having on the people's lives and on institutions.

Acts of Faith:
The Story of an American Muslim,
The Struggle for the Soul of a Generation
Eboo Patel

An autobiography of a modern interfaith leader, Acts of Faith tells the story of Eboo Patel. Patel, a former Rhodes scholar with a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford, is the founder of the Interfaith Youth Core, an organization that unites young people of different religions to perform community service and explore their common values. Patel argues that such work is essential, manifesting the faith line that will define the 21st century. With honesty, Patel relates how he suffered the racist taunts of fellow youth, and, in response, alternately rebelled against and absorbed the religion of his parents but in his own way. Meanwhile, he continued to pursue interfaith work with vigor, not quite knowing his end goal but always feeling in his gut that interfaith understanding was the key. This autobiography of a young activist captures how an angry youth can be transformed—by faith, by the community and, most of all, by himself—into a profound leader for the cause of peace.
