Careers in Classics

The study of Classics prepares students for a very wide range of careers. The department does not view Classics as a pre-professional program but as a background in ancient languages, their philosophies and history, disciplined problem solving and intellectual acuity which can be applied to numerous fields of professional endeavor.

Graduates have successfully pursued a broad variety of careers in, for example, business, law, medicine and journalism. Those who have continued their study of the Classics with the goal of teaching at the high school or collegiate level have found their Xavier preparation to be most helpful in pursuing their career.

Graduate schools attended by recent students in the Classics include St. Andrews (Scotland), Catholic University, University of Chicago, University of Cincinnati, University of Georgia, University of Missouri, Ohio State University, University of Toronto, University of Vienna, University of Virginia and University of Wisconsin.
