Chemistry Programs

Applied Chemistry Major

Applied chemistry is the course of study for students who wish to enter the field of chemical engineering. A true professional engineer attains and continuously enhances both technical and human knowledge, skills and attitudes. The skills are essential problem-solving techniques of design using disciplines of science, mathematics and technology. Knowledge and attitudes, along with personal creativity and judgment, combine with skills to effectively serve the society in theory, development and production of structures and devices of practical and economic value.

The engineering/applied chemistry program begins with two years of study at Xavier University. During the student's third year, classes are taken both at Xavier and at the University of Cincinnati. The fourth, fifth and sixth year of classes and co-op programs are taken at the University of Cincinnati (5-10 minutes from the Xavier campus). The student earns a B.S. degree from Xavier as well as a degree from the University of Cincinnati (degree varies depending on the program followed at UC). This cooperative plan also allows a student to continue toward Master's Degree in engineering in a field such as chemical or metallurgical engineering.

The scientific education at Xavier, as a liberal arts institution, provides one of the best undergraduate educations possible.

Senior Year

The fourth, fifth and sixth years are completed in the appropriate department in the College of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. This work is arranged in cooperation with the student, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati.

After three years, some students choose to remain at Xavier and complete their program. Individual arrangements are made for the fourth year. A degree in applied chemistry is awarded by Xavier.
