| Description: | Slavery at the Constitutional Convention: lecture by
Prof. Michael Zuckert Dept. of Political Science University of Notre Dame
Views about the role of slavery at the constitutional convention and in the original constitution divide between those who accept a Garrisonian view that the constitution was strongly pro-slavery and was so intentionally and Lincolnians, who see the constitution and the founders as essentially anti-slavery. I argue that neither is correct and that slavery in the constitution can only be understood in light of the broader intentions of its makers. The result is a view that neither lionizes nor demonizes the founders. |
