Job Search

Employing a variety of techniques to search for jobs and internships is important. According to the Wall Street Journal, “many users are finding that job hunts conducted solely online rarely produce jobs. In fact, no single method works all the time which is why job seekers should use a variety of methods to job search.”

Job search methods include:

Career Networking

Networking. This strategy involves contacting people to seek their career advice, discuss strategies, conduct informational interviews, and DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS. It is NOT asking them for a job or an internship. Seventy percent of jobs are obtained through NETWORKING.

LinkedIN is a great online tool for staying connected with peers, colleagues, and networking with others.

The Internet Public Library offers a Directory of Associations.  You can find those most relevant to your interests.  Many offer special rates for student membership and they often have job postings on their websites.

Establishing your Job Search Goals. Know what you want to do (it is ok to have more than one career interest) and where you want to work (corporate, non-profit, education, government, locally, overseas, etc.)

Registering with Employment/Temporary Agencies. Immediate openings are available for permanent or summer employment through these resources. Be cautious - utilize only “fee-paid” agencies, which indicates the agency receives compensation from the company. You may find these agencies at http://www.athand.com, an online Yellow Pages Directory. Students should take a number of interviews resulting from this source. Sophomores and juniors have obtained substantive summer work from temporary agencies.

Attending Career Fairs. Career Service Center host four fairs (two in the fall and two in the spring). Search the web with Google or Yahoo to locate career fairs in the area you’d like to work and live. Also visit careerfairs.com and search by month, location, and job type.

  • Business Database – articles and information written about companies by outside sources.

  • Hoovers – Company Specific information http://www.xu.edu/library/
    1. Click Database Guides by Subject
    2. Select Business
    3. Select Hoovers
    4. Type in Company Name
    5. Once at information on company, can obtain an overview of the organization, competitors, financial information, as well as detail company profiles by selecting "Build Custom Report".

Connecting with Alumni. Visit Alumni & Friends website or consider connecting with an alumni chapter in a specific region of the county.

If your search results are limited using the industry section, use the keyword section. Use a variety of words to make the search broader.

  • Makingthedifference - Learn about public service and federal jobs/internship opportunities
  • MonsterTRAK - First time users click on "Sign Up Now"; choose college (Xavier); enter “muskies” password to set up account
  • Hot Jobs - Click “Job Search” on the top tool bar. Then click on “Advanced Job Search.” Scroll down to “Experience Level” and click 0-1 years experience. Then scroll down to “Job Source” and unclick “Staffing Firms.”
  • Ohio Job Prospector - focus is to provide job seekers with all the information needed to research, select and contact the Ohio employers of your choice.  Click on "Get Started" and select "Xavier University".  The password is case sensitive:  Career Services
  • CollegeGrad.com - Lists entry-level jobs, internships, and other key job search information
  • CareerBuilder.com – “Quick Job Search” by location and job type
  • CareerJet.com - Job search engine with the ability to sort search criteria by region of the country and job types
  • CommongoodCareers.com - Offers personalized, engaged services to jobseekers and organizations, as well as access to a wealth of information about careers in the social sector.
  • EmploymentGuide.com - Click on “Search Jobs”
  • GrouperEye.com - For college students!  Links students with jobs, internships, and case competitions.
  • Idealist.org - Lists great non-profit positions; daily updates
  • Indeed.com - Indeed gives job seekers free access to millions of employment opportunities from thousands of websites.
  • AboutJobs.com - Has break down categories of overseas, intern, summer, and resort jobs
  • Vault - Great site with jobs in various industries. Wonderful source of good job seeking information.
  • Wetfeet - Very similar to vault.com. Another good resource.
  • USAJobs - The government is definitely hiring!
  • DirectEmployers - Employment search engine is owned and managed by employers through a non-profit employer association
  • Northern Kentucky Jobs - Job search site for job seekers with a special section for students searching for internships and co-ops. Also lists employers who offer tuition reimbursement.
  • Not-for-Profit News - Cincinnati website providing job/internship listings as well as news, events, and professional development events.  You may even subscribe to their electronic newsletter.

Using Career Center Resources. Career Services Website has various lists of organizations and web links categorized by major. Our Career Specific Links provide a wide variety of web resources by major.

The Career Resource Library, located in Room 310 in Gallagher Student Center, houses a collection of valuable resource books on a wide range of career development topics. Many of these may be checked out for 48 hour use.
