STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES

Name: MAURA WINTERS

Class Year/Year of Graduation:  Senior 2014

Major/Graduate Program: Communication Studies Major; Strategic Human Resource Management and Peace Studies Minors

Newly hired as (position, company):
Executive Recruiting Intern at Macy's

Where did you hear about this professional opportunity, and what do you think contributed to being hired?  I saw the position on eRecruiting and reached out to Jonika who is in contact with Aaron Parker (the one who posted the position) and asked her if she had any tips for me or ways to introduce myself to Aaron. I wanted to be more than a name and a resume. So, Jonika e-mailed Aaron and mentioned my name and resume along with asking about the current internship position. Also, I e-mailed a man that I met at a Macy's diversity event on campus and asked for interview pointers if I were to get an interview. Upon receiving a chance to interview, I reached out to my friend who works as a member of the EDP program at Macy's for pointers. I then had an interview with the Director or Executive Recruitment. Whether any of these interactions contributed to me getting the job is unsure, but it never hurts to try different angles.

How did Xavier Career Services help you along the way to achieve this accomplishment?
The CDO has always been a GREAT help with being ready and willing to critique my resume and give me interviewing tips. They all have a welcoming smile and attitude while being encouraging during any job search and hiring process whether it be an on or off campus interview.

Based on your own experiences, what advice do you have for students as they gear up for their job/internship search?  I would tell the students that it is never too early to start the job search or resume critiques. Even if you are confident with your resume and do not feel like going to a resume workshop put on by a company?DO IT! You never know who you will meet and the connections that you will make. I was able to make a connection at one and she remembered my face at the career fair. So, moral of the story is to start networking now and utilize ANY and ALL available resources and people. Everyone at Xavier, including the CDO, wants to see you succeed and go far in life. Do not be afraid to ask for help and be confident in yourself.
