In 2006, leading community agencies joined to implement a place-based investors’ collaborative to support Comprehensive Community Initiatives (CCI), seeking to address and improve social conditions in tightly concentrated geographic areas in the tri-state. The result was place matters,an initiative to coordinate strategy and system-level activities at the neighborhood level with collaboration among neighborhood groups. After considering twenty-six neighborhoods in the tri-state region, the collaborative selected three to serve as pilot sites for the place matters initiative: Avondale, Price Hill, and Covington.
Now that place matters has been in operation since 2007, it has stepped back to evaluate and see what its successes have been, what has been learned, and how two other communities, Felicity and Middletown, are approaching comprehensive community investments. Each neighborhood made progress with respect to the capacity that was built. place matters agencies spent many hours on evaluations and on documentation that will increase understanding of how community capacity is built in transforming programs and neighborhoods. place matters has been renewed for another 3-year period. place matters phase II will run from January 2010 through December 2012.
Lead Agency and Primary Partners in Avondale are the Avondale Community Council, Every Child Succeeds, the Center for Closing the Health Gap, and the Avondale Redevelopment Corporation. The Lead Agency in Covington is the Center for Great Neighborhoods. The Lead Agencies in Price Hill are Price Hill W!ll and Santa Maria Community Services.
Since 2006, place matters has primarily been funded by: the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr./US Bank Foundation, Chase Bank, LISC of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky, NeighborWorks America, PNC Bank, and the SC Ministry Foundation. Xavier’s Community Building Institute has acted as overall project manager.
