Xavier University is introducing two new study-abroad programs to begin this summer.
From June 4-22, undergraduate students in any major can earn 6 credit hours while studying and traveling in Israel. Doing Business in Israel (3 cr hrs) will introduce participants to the political, economic and social environment in Israel, with special emphasis on social entrepreneurship and cultural impact on business. Coursework also covers the rich cultural and religious background of this nation. A 300-level theology course will also be offered. While built upon the Xavier curriculum, course credits could be transferable to other colleges and universities.
“I anticipate a very positive experience for the travelers,” states George Gordon, who will lead the undergraduate trip. “It is not only a chance to earn 6 credit hours, but it’s an opportunity to look at history and tradition in order to understand today’s business values as well as Israel and the Middle East’s role in today’s flat world. Is there any better place to study comparative religion than in Jerusalem?”
From May 23 - 31, MBA students and interested alumni will take a 3-credit hour course “Doing Business in Israel.” It is designed to: (1) keep abreast of the rapidly changing market conditions faced by Israel in the global economy; (2) develop an awareness of the centrality of Israel as a global economic power; (3) understand the similarities and differences in business cultures between the United States and Israel and evaluate how companies that function in both countries adapt to the local culture.
Those in both programs will have a unique opportunity to study companies that function in both countries by visiting them first in Greater Cincinnati and then seeing them operate in Israel. Senior business leaders, government officials, entrepreneurs, and Israeli business students will meet with both groups. No part of either trip is in disputed or militarily-active regions.
At Xavier, graduate students have had opportunities to study abroad in China, Jordan & Egypt, and Korea & Japan. Undergraduates have been able to study abroad in the Netherlands.
Those in both cohorts will visit Nazareth, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Mount of Olives, Gethsemane, the Western Wall, Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, the Israel stock exchange, Golan Economic Development Council, meet Israeli investment professionals, swim in Hamat Gader hot springs, float in the Dead Sea, and more.
“According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Israel has more companies on the NASDAQ than any other country, except the U.S. and Canada,” says Art Shriberg, who will lead the graduate trip. “It is known for social entrepreneurship and for high-tech companies, and we will have the unique opportunity to speak to the leaders of these companies and to see them in action. We will have an intensive, enjoyable, and extremely interesting experience.”
Both Dr. Shriberg and Professor Gordon have led numerous international trips and have substantial experience working with Israeli and other Middle Eastern cultures.

Cost for each program is tuition fee for the classes plus $3,200, which includes, all travel to and from as well as within Israel, all hotels, most meals, and other incidentals.
Art Shriberg, Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship, spent twenty years as a Vice President or Dean in four urban universities. He also chairs the university wide academic program called E Pluribus Unum. He is the senior author (with Richa Kumari and his son David Shriberg) of the college textbook Practicing Leadership: Principles and Applications. He also is the senior author (with Richa Kumari and Vincent Brown) of a bi-monthly column entitled “Inclusive Leadership”, syndicated in several newspapers throughout the country. He is at work on a book Living an Inclusive Life at Work, Play and Beyond. Shriberg has written numerous articles and is a regular presenter at professional conferences. He is extremely active in the community and is the past president of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission. He has consulted with and facilitated training programs concerning leadership, diversity, management skills and group communication skills in over 150 corporate, governmental, health care, not-for-profit, and educational settings. He is a management coach and motivational speaker.
George Gordon has over 25 years of experience as a human resource consultant and executive coach. He was Assistant Director in Leadership and Career Services at Xavier, and on faculty at the University of Cincinnati. Currently, he is an instructor in the MBA program of Xavier’s Williams College of Business and a consultant in workforce development and human resource management with clients nationally and internationally. With degrees in management, marketing, law and interpersonal counseling, he is a licensed counselor and a certified senior human resource manager. Gordon is a past president and board member of the Greater Cincinnati American Society of Training & Development and the local Society of Human Resource Management. He has served on numerous community and corporate boards, and has published several pieces on workforce development.
