Xavier University opened the 2008-09 season in Athens, Ohio on October 11-12, returning with two Reserve Champion prizes. Led by Open rider Sarah Krings, a senior from Turpin High School in Anderson Township, this is the best start ever in the short history of the Xavier Equestrian Club. Xavier finished second out of eight teams, right behind 2008 National Champion University of Kentucky, actually leading Kentucky most of Sunday before falling to 2nd place in the final class of the weekend.
Xavier earned blue ribbons from Kevin Keller, a junior from Shelby, Ohio and freshman Kate Barnes from Chicago. Great rides and high scores were also earned by freshmen Erin Rust of Pendleton County, Kentucky and Brittnay Ray of Fort Wayne, Indiana, sophomores Bridget Callanan of Baltimore, Maryland, Francesca Veitch of Cincinnati, and Molly Rubin of New Haven, Connecticut.
The season opener was hosted by the Xavier Equestrian team at Stonegate Farm, home of the Ohio University equestrian team near Athens, Ohio. Also competing in Xavier’s region are: University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Midway College, Morehead State, Marshall University, Ohio University-Southern Campus, and University of Cincinnati. Xavier Equestrian will be back in action at Midway College, near Lexington, on November 8-9. After that, Xavier Equestrian will travel to Cleveland’s prestigious Holiday Tournament of Champions, competing against twenty-four of the top college teams in the nation.
Xavier Equestrian still is actively seeking new members at any level of riding experience. Interested Xavier students should contact Sarah Krings at firstname.lastname@example.org, or coach Jim Arrigon at email@example.com.
