Adjunct Professor of Guitar, Kevin Ebert, recently attended the International Conference on Heavy Metal and Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he presented a session entitled "Bridging the Divide? Classical Music and Popular Culture in Symphonic Metal." Scholars from Germany, Norway, England, Brazil, Finland, France, New Zealand, Canada, and the U.S. all gathered for four days of rigorous academic discourse about heavy metal.
The Wall Street Journal attended all four days of the event and on Monday, April 15 published a major article about the conference. Mr. Ebert appeared several times in the online video component that accompanied the article. Other papers which covered the conference included the Toledo Blade and the Toledo Free Press.
Since 2010, Kevin Ebert has taught Heavy Metal: Music, Culture & Politics at Xavier University. The course was entirely self-designed and is one of the nation's first music courses to exclusively focus on heavy metal as a serious academic subject.
