On January 24th, the Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati opens an exhibition in the third floor gallery of the Gallagher Student Center at Xavier University. Celebrating Women: Innovation within Tradition, honors the admission of female students to Xavier in 1969 and features objects created by Guild members specifically for this juried show. Each artwork incorporates at least one innovation, invention, or new idea from the last forty years, whether in fiber techniques, equipment, or materials, or in cultural trends or historical events.
The show is a part of an ongoing series of exhibits celebrating the role of women at Xavier organized, juried, and curated by Kitty Uetz, Director of Xavier University Art Galleries and faculty member in the Department of Art.
Internationally renowned fiber artist and educator Arturo Alonzo Sandoval (University of Kentucky) will select a recipient of the Handweavers Guild of America Award from among those artists who created work in the traditional fiber techniques of handweaving, spinning, dyeing, basket weaving, or felting.
