The newly combined Department of Music and Theatre presents its debut production of Hairspray, an entertaining and thought-provoking musical centered on themes of diversity and acceptance, on Friday, Oct. 19.
Formerly two separate departments for music and performing arts, the new department was created in July as an academic department offering majors in music and theater. Hairspray is its first production.
When theater department director Stephen Skiles met earlier with members of the Xavier Players, the University’s theater club on campus, to discuss the upcoming school year, the students were talking about Hairspray.
“One of the students mentioned that the running joke was that Hairspray would be the next musical they’d do every year,” said Skiles. “I saw there was interest amongst the students for this show, and there was. At the auditions, 80 students showed up.”
The cast consists of students from Xavier, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Northern Kentucky University and two high schools.
There are six performances of Hairspray, including a performance for local high schools, spread over two weekends, Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 26-27. Shows start at 8:00 p.m. with a matinee show on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1:00 p.m.
Tickets for faculty, staff, children, seniors and students are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. General admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Gallagher Student Center Box Office at 513-745-3939 or online.
