Xavier’s next phase of construction is underway with the recent demolition and site clearing of four houses along Ledgewood Drive and Herald Avenue in the heart of Xavier’s campus.
The Dorothy Day House, Bellarmine Parish House, Loyola House on Herald and a white house for the Xavier construction field office on Ledgewood were demolished to make way for a new residential complex expected to open in August 2011. That means the incoming class of freshmen this fall will be the first to occupy the new building.
The complex will be second only to the Cintas Center in size among buildings on campus. It features four residential towers with 535 beds and an 800-seat dining hall. The large, suite-style rooms are designed for second-year students. Its central location provides easy access to campus and offers a complementary balance to the Kuhlman and Husman halls across Herald Avenue.
Distinctive elements include a greenspace on the roof of the dining hall and 6,000 square feet of space fronting Herald Avenue to be developed as retail. Open forums were held for students and other campus constituents to share their ideas and opinions about the new complex.
The square footage of buildings on the Xavier campus will grow from 1.78 million today to 2.22 million in August 2011. The residential space will be about 190,000 square feet of the new complex’s total of about 229,000 square feet.
The additional capacity is needed to meet current student demand. It is being financed primarily through the issuance of bonds. Revenue from student boarding fees will help repay the bonds.
