Xavier University Department of School and Community Counseling Faculty participated in the 25th Annual All Ohio Counselors Conference in Columbus, Ohio November 5-7, 2008. Dr. Lon Kriner received the George Hill Award for outstanding service in the area of school counseling. This achievement recognizes Dr. Kriner’s commitment to the development of future counselors as well as his constant support to school counseling programs. Additional contributions from faculty:
Dr. Brent Richardson presented a six hour pre conference session to approximately 40 counselors on a topic entitled “Cutting and Self-Injury: A Workshop for School and Community Counselors." The session evaluations from participants rated the workshop as one of the best educational experiences at the three day conference.
Dr. Robert Wubbolding, Professor Emeritus, also conducted a six hour pre conference session entitled “How to Empower with Brief Reality Therapy Interventions.” Dr. Wubbolding is well known as an engaging speaker both in Ohio and throughout the world. Many participants plan to follow up with a week -long training in Basic Reality Therapy Skills in February 2009.
Dr. Rhonda Norman, Past President of the Ohio Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development and Dr. Margery Shupe, Faculty Liaison for Chi Sigma Iota, supported Dr. Bill O’Connell, co-chair of the conference. Dr. O’Connell, along with Judy Maver, President of the Ohio School Counseling Association, began organizing the conference in November 2007. Approximately 1200 counselors were in attendance. The Executive Director of OCA stated “the 2008 conference was a success as evidenced by the work of Bill and Judy to promote a spirit of collaboration and hospitality throughout the entire three day conference.”
Students LaTanya Cobb (Community Counseling) and Laura Domet (School Counseling) co-presented with Dr. Sherlon Brown, Bowling Green State University and Ms. Ja'Nitta Marbury on their summer service learning trip to Jamaica.
