Thirty-eight color images spanning the career of freelance photojournalist Doug Cochran will be on display at the Cintas Gallery of the Cintas Center on Xavier University’s campus (enter at the Schiff Conference Center door). It will be open Monday-Saturday 9-5 from March 1 through June 30. Admission is free.
For the last 22 years, Cochran has combined his respect for the athlete with a talent and dedication to sports photojournalism. The images capture the emotion, the beauty and the athletic grace the sports world offers.
“If I had to describe my work,” Cochran says, “it would be a desire to show more than just that people played the game, but why they played. Under every helmet and every uniform is someone with a story. As a sports photojournalist, I have to find that story and then tell it in pictures. The overwhelming drive, the pure emotion, the physical boldness deserve to be captured.”
After earning a master’s degree from Ohio University School of Visual Communication, Cochran began his career as a general assignment newspaper photographer, which requires inherent ability in all disciplines of photography. His evolution to full time sports photography in 1998 allowed him to capture and communicate moments that cannot be recreated, duplicated or staged.
Cochran’s work has appeared in The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Kentucky Enquirer, The Cincinnati Post, ESPN The Magazine, Sports Illustrated, The Associated Press, The Washington Post, The Catholic Telegraph, Australia Network News, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, The Troy Daily News, Inside Lacrosse Magazine, NCAA Final Four publications, A-10 Athletic Conference publications, The Catholic News Messenger, Upper Deck trading cards, Sport Compact Car Magazine, Road Racer X Magazine, The Appaloosa Journal and in publications with universities throughout the United States.
