Tom Barlow and his son Blake of Sunset Avenue in Erlanger (41018) have returned from Cuba where they donated two suitcases of toiletry items and worked at a leper colony and with a community program for children. Blake is a senior at St. Henry District High School and will attend Xavier University in the fall, where his father is director of auxiliary services.
The El Rincon Sanatorium for lepers at the Hospital San Lazaro is overseen by the Daughters of Charity. The Barlows spent time working with Sor (Sister) Olga and Sor Marta. The community program helps people in poverty to develop themselves and builds homes for the families. Tom and Blake were involved mostly with the children.
Blake has been offered Xavier University’s Trustee scholarship. He has received awards from the City of Erlanger and the Governor of Kentucky for community service. The Cuban humanitarian project was his idea and his father helped it happen.
