The Xavier University Dance Team is once again on its way to national championship competition. For the fifth year in a row, the team is heading to Daytona Beach, FL to compete in the NDA Collegiate Championship April 9-11. They will compete in the Open Division I against more than a dozen other teams.
In preparation for the national competition, the team will hold a performance on Sunday, March 29 at 6:00 p.m. in Schmidt Fieldhouse on the University campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
During the school year, the squad practices eight hours a week. In addition, they do numerous performances and fundraisers. Team members are also required to do an additional hour of cardio conditioning each week. They have performed at Reds games, Xavier Club Football games, XU men’s and women’s basketball games, and area high school basketball games.
Jennifer Smith, former University of Cincinnati dancer, is in her fourth year as coach of Xavier’s Dance Team. Steve Chapla, a former University of Cincinnati cheerleader, is in his seventh year coaching the team. “We have a great group of girls this year. The team has worked really hard with fundraising, practicing and performing. The team is dedicated and work really well together!” says Chapla.
