Xavier University and the Department of Art are pleased to announce our fourth annual national all media juried exhibition Art at the X. Our 2010 juror is Dennis Harrington, Director, Weston Art Gallery, Cincinnati. 266 art entries were received from 92 artists located in 29 states and Canada. Mr. Harrington selected 72 pieces for exhibition. He shares his experience as follows:
“As director of the Weston Art Gallery I have the unique pleasure to view artists’ work on a regular basis. It is one of the favorite aspects of my job. While our focus is showcasing artists from Cincinnati and the Ohio region, judging an exhibition such as Xavier University’s 2010 Art at the X affords me the opportunity to view works from a wider geographical area. Although I welcome such opportunities, it can sometimes be a daunting task to select from a large sampling of work strictly through projected images and within a limited timeframe.
Despite these initial reservations, I quickly became impressed with the overall quality and diversity of artistic mediums that were submitted for the competition. While this was a pleasing experience, it made it somewhat challenging to narrow the selections to allow for an exhibition that was not overly crowded and would present the selected works in the most effective way. After several viewings of the work I felt confident that my final selections would result in an exhibition that showcased a wide variety of artistic disciplines that included painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media works ranging from abstraction to representational.
It is my hope that the resulting exhibition will provide viewers with a thought-provoking and inspiring artistic sampling of the many creative approaches artist employ in communicating their creative thoughts and observations of the world around us.”
Please join us for the artists’ reception on Friday, August 27th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallery. Meet the artists and enjoy the art and refreshments.
