Celebrates Women | September 18, 2009

Xavier University’s department of art announces the 2009 Art at the X National All-Media Juried Exhibition October 2-November 7.  The Xavier Art Gallery is on the Xavier Campus in the Cohen Building and is open Monday-Friday 10 am – 4 pm. The artists' reception and awards will be Friday, October 2, from 6 - 8 p.m. A panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Jennifer Wies, director of the Women’s Center at Xavier, will be held Wednesday, October 21 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Participants will be announced at a later date. On Saturday, November 7th, the gallery will be open for Reunion Weekend from noon-2 p.m. All events will be held in the Xavier University Art Gallery and are free and open to the public.
The theme for 2009 is “Celebrating Women” in recognition and in honor of the accomplishments of 40 years of women at Xavier University. Entries were juried by Jessica Flores, associate curator of contemporary art, Cincinnati Art Museum. Flores reviewed 358 works submitted by 128 artists from 31 states and Canada.  She selected 56 pieces for the exhibition.
“As a juror, it is always interesting to see new work and encounter artists with whom I otherwise might not be familiar,” Flores said. “This year’s theme, Celebrating Women, offers an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of Xavier women over the past 40 years. As the works were juried from slides, without artists’ names, the gender of the artist was not a considered criterion.”
The exhibition includes sculpture, installations, photography, drawing, prints, landscape and figure painting. Flores believes it demonstrates a range of voices, materials and approaches and hopes it will allow audiences to consider and move beyond preconceptions about gender.
