Guy Jones Presents at Xavier for Native American Month

What began at the turn of the last century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions made by the first Americans to the country’s growth has resulted in a whole month set aside for that purpose. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved designated a joint resolution designating November "National American Indian Heritage Month." The heritage of the Native American will be celebrated at Xavier University in a number of ways.

20th Annual Shantytown at Xavier

For the 20th year in a row, a shantytown will spring up on the Academic Mall at Xavier University to educate people about the struggle of homeless veterans. Xavier University Shantytown 2008 begins at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 18 when students begin building cardboard shanties where they will stay for several days. The event ends at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23.

Sustainability Day 2009

Xavier University will celebrate Sustainability Day in 2009 on Tuesday, October 27 from 10-3:30 in the Schiff Family Conference Center. Sustainability Day replaces Academic Day this year. The events are not open to the general public, but the message is universally applicable.

The result was place matters,an initiative to coordinate strategy and system-level activities at the neighborhood level with collaboration among neighborhood groups. After considering twenty-six neighborhoods in the tri-state region, the collaborative selected three to serve as pilot sites for the place matters initiative: Avondale, Price Hill, and Covington.

Robert J. Kohlhepp, Vice Chairman of Cintas Corporation, was appointed chairman of the Xavier University Board of Trustees on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009. He succeeds Joseph A. Pichler, retired chairman and chief executive officer of The Kroger Co., who served as chairman since 2004.

Vandana Shiva will address “Soil Not Oil: Food Security in Times of Climate Change” on Wednesday, October 28 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the Schiff Conference Center in Xavier’s Cintas Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. Shiva is a physicist, author and environmental activist from India. She will be speaking about her newest book, "Soil Not Oil: Food Security in Times of Climate Change".

“The Cap and The Collar,” an unusual folk duo, will perform on October 6 at 8:30 pm in the Gallagher Student Center Lower Level Atrium. Think 1960’s coffee house for the atmosphere. The free performance will be the closing event for the Children of Abraham exhibit that has been on display on the 3rd floor of Gallagher. The public is invited.

Institute for Jesuit Education to be Named in Honor of Conways

Xavier University’s new Institute for Jesuit Education will be named in honor of Ruth J. and Robert A. Conway. Robert Conway is a 1949 graduate of Xavier who has given generously of his time and treasure, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and chair of the Jesuit Identity Committee. The Ruth J. & Robert A. Conway Institute for Jesuit Education will be a key component of Xavier’s Conaton Learning Commons and the James E. Hoff, S.J., Academic Quad, scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.
