Two Xavier Chemistry Graduates Publish Pivotal Study in International Journal

Dawn M. Makley, a 2007 magna cum laude graduate of Xavier University, has co-authored an article published in the journal Nature. The research will aid medicinal chemists in making biologically-active compounds that might battle disease. Makley was a double major in chemical science and biology at Xavier and is currently a PhD candidate in chemistry at Vanderbilt University, working under the mentorship of Professor Jeffrey N. Johnston, a 1992 graduate of Xavier’s chemistry department.

Xavier Staff Move to Conaton Learning Commons in New Hoff Academic Quad

On Tuesday, July 20 at approximately 10:00 a.m. the first move will be made to the new Michael J. Conaton Learning Commons (CLC) located on the southwest corner of Dana and Ledgewood Avenues. Other moves will be made during the rest of the week. The moves include Discovery Services and the math and writing academic labs. A total of 24 faculty and staff will be moved during the week.

Women"s Center Reprises Popular Exhibit

The Xavier University Women’s Center is again hosting “1000 PeaceWomen,” an exhibit first shown in January 2008 at the Center. It aims to connect and strengthen women's peace efforts around the globe so that a strong, cross-sectoral and global women's peace movement will emerge. The exhibit opens July 13 at the Women's Center located at 1415 Dana Avenue and will be open to the public from 8:30-5, Monday through Friday. Admission to the exhibit is free.

Xavier Rabbi Speaker at Dedication of Berlin Wall Monument

Twenty years after it was torn down, a piece of the Berlin Wall is going back up – this time as a monument to freedom. On July 3 from 5:30-9:30 pm, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will dedicate a graffiti-covered 4-by-13-foot section of the Berlin Wall as a monument to its fall in 1989.

Xavier Receives Grant to Offer Free Learning Academy to New Teachers

Xavier University has been awarded a grant to develop and implement Xavier’s New Teacher Academy to support the needs of first-third year teachers in Greater Cincinnati. The pilot program will be offered free of charge to 30 teachers during the 2010-2011 academic year. Applications are currently being accepted.

Counseling Student Receives Inaugural Jesuit Heritage Grant Award

Mona Breitbeil of Cincinnati (45238) has received the first Jesuit Heritage Grant Award from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. The purpose of the grant is to further the recognition of Jesuit Identity in the College and promote the educational outcome that graduates of Xavier are men and women for others standing for justice and peace. She received $500 toward the purchase of program textbooks from the Xavier Bookstore.

Xavier Professor Receives Grant to Study Incongruities Between Faith and Ecology

Elizabeth Groppe, associate professor of Theology at Xavier University, has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the Louisville Institute for a research sabbatical from January 1 to August 31, 2011 to research a book entitled “Guarding the Flame of the Grandeur of God: Christian Life and Practice in an Era of Ecological Crisis.”
