The Muskies talked for weeks about the "business trip" to Columbus at the end of the year and it proved to be the highlight of the programs young history. Led by seniors Brian Campbell, Kyle Nelson and Connor Barnes, the team took four straight games and won the Columbus Regional Championship. Wins over, NKU, Wooster and Denison put the Muskies intot the finals against rival IU. The teams had split the regular season series 2 - 2.
IU struck early and had a 2 - 0 lead at the six minute mark of the game. However, the Muskies battled back to tie it up at the end of the first at 3 - 3. A strong second period allowed X to pull ahead 5-3 after two periods. However, IU was not about to roll over. Early in the third the Hoosiers made it 5 -4 and had the momentum. "the intensity on the bench went to another level at that point. The bench was electric with guys determined to finish it off. It was out of the coaches hands at that point - every guy was "all in" and they didn't need our help. They took care of business." said coach Driscoll. The Muskies scored three more goals to make it 8 - 4 and the hardware was heading back to Cincinnati.
Emotions were high as the celebration began, especially for the seniors who started their careers as the program was just beginning. It was built on the backs of guys like Barnes, Campbell, Nelson, Joe Bauer and Tim Becka. "A lot of weaker guys would have quit and many did. Not these guys. Competitive hockey may be over for them but this experience will go a long way towards making these guys highly successful in their chosen careers" said Driscoll.
Thanks to all the fans and the incredible parent support this year.
